Sentenced to jail in 1997 as a university student aged 22, Yusuf is released on health grounds 10 years later. He returns to his village in the eastern Black Sea region, where he's welcomed only by his sick and elderly mother. It turns out that his father died while he was in jail and his older sister got married and moved away to the city. 22 December 08, with my mother & father (capacity) & When I first watched it, I remembered it as a film that I was very impressed. Now when I go back and think, I realized that it is a film that tries to be poetic with the use of (unnecessary) music. In short; that's not what political cinema is.

A man is released from jail for ill-health and returns to a Turkish mountain village to die. An overlong, mournful film with lots of staring out of windows smoking, this offers no glimmer of hope. That said, the cinematography is great and we get to see a beautiful part of the world seldom seen on film.

Generally pleasant to watch, with a nice slow pace and appealing mise en scène, somewhat let down by occasional amateurish filmmaking (the flashbacks are poorly integrated), some bad music and sound effects (couldn't help but laugh every time at the utterly generic rooster crow), and a morosely fatalistic third act.
