Having two renowned songwriters take the lead in "Songwriter" adds a layer of authenticity, providing a delightful parallel to their real-life images. This casting choice adds charm to the film, even as the plot twists into complexity and indulgence. The music unexpectedly falls short of the high expectations one might have for such a musically rooted film.

Amiable comedy set against the country music scene, focusing on the team of Doc (Willie Nelson) and Blackie (Kris Kristofferson), and their attempts to outsmart a greedy record executive (Richard C. Sarafian). Nelson and Kristofferson have charisma to burn, and provide some fine songs, while the supporting cast is generally fun to watch. But Bud Shrake's script is patchy and underfed, and the film as a whole is pretty inconsequential, while a big joke at the end falls flat. See it for the songs.

Kind of a hell of a thing, patchy road-conceived Willie Nelson roman à clef with a warm yet impish & not-entirely-flattering lead performance, embracing the "tirelessly hustling snake-oil salesman trying to stay one step ahead of his creditors" side (Nick Pinkerton), and yet of a piece with Rudolph's CHOOSE ME & TROUBLE IN MIND in its odd, mischievous rhythms and arch approach to its genres' trappings, only over-nudging in the final minutes. Also seems in some ways a sly response to NASHVILLE

Viewed January 28, 2021. Occasionally too scattershot, but the way that Rudolph visually links together different images, scenes, actions is always compelling.

A very plot-thin tale of folksy scoundrels gunning for the leftovers of SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT's audience, set against the backdrop of the country music industry. Probably most interesting as a document of a particular slice of American culture, one reminds you that the '80s weren't populated entirely by yuppies and Valley Girls, but also charismatic post-counterculture poets like Kristofferson and Nelson.
