Children on the brink of growing up, roaming the working-class San Giovanni neighborhood south of Rome's Stazioni Termini, experience the small tragedies and triumphs of adult life in Castellani's enjoyable and finely tuned portrait. A contemporary reviewer noted in 1949, "Definitely an authentic tranche de vie--yet lacking in the tiresome moral bind of the naturalists, the dreary political aims of the populists." While Renato Castellani's creation has a lot of the qualities that makes the new era of neorealism good, I struggled to appreciate what it had to offer. I can absolutely see the appeal, and there were aspects I liked, but the way this story unfolded wasn't dragging me in the way I had hoped. People that live and breathe the Italian neo style, will absolutely adore this one. That I'm sure of.
