It's sooo slooow. Should have been 90 minutes. At times it felt like we were watching whole scenes of outtakes.

I had a good time with it. The third act is where this version completely breaks off from the original. Which is a shame. It turns into fairly generic thriller fare.

...but only because American audiences will hear no evil.

The first two acts are really great and this scores as highly as it does because of James McAvoy and his amazing performance. There could have been more done in the third act to try and set itself up as a new pinnacle of psychological horror. It opted for a more realistic and traditional horror ending and that hurt the momentum the film had been building.

Even without seeing the original, it's clear this is an Americanised version of a foreign film. I heard the ending of the original was different, which supports my earlier point. The ending was cheesy and predictable. I wish it had been more shocking and nihilistic. The last 20ish minutes felt like I was watching Home Alone—more comedy than thriller. Despite that, the movie was still enjoyable, due to James McAvoy's great performance, but the overall cheesiness and the ending was disappointing.

A very poor remake, the only redeeming feature is James McAvoy who should be the next Wolverine, but he's already played the Prof.

McAvoy by himself is enough reason to watch it... And is basically the only reason to watch it. All the suspense the movie conjures up starts and ends with him. Until the climax, when it becomes a lot less interesting.

On the one hand, I respect that the remake was indeed a "remake", like when a band covers a song and you're like "oh wow, this feels like their tune now it's not just some tribute shit". On the other hand, the end result is quite meaningless besides being a run-of-the-mill horror/thriller flick. At least we have some good performances.

Probably takes a little too long to get going, and the payoff doesn't really justify the build. People do some really stupid things here. Not scary, but McAvoy is a believable presence here in yet another good performance. I enjoyed watching it but it also left me a little cold because it doesn't really do anything incredible, except for put a lot of importance on Hoppy, the stuffed bunny, which nobody but me cares about.

Starts off slow. REALLY slow. Nothing happens for like 40 minutes, then it gets dumb. Then it gets dumber. Then it gets REALLY dumb. What a waste of time.

It's pretty effective overall, I enjoyed it. Some changes they made don't fully work for me (James McAvoy's character being so incredibly offputting from the get-go is kinda silly), but it didn't fully derail the movie.

McAvoy stays great in this perhaps painfully-slow burn that meets some of its potential, but ultimately falls short. I'm compelled by his character as he gets more unhinged and the facade falls apart, but it's 50+ minutes before stuff finally starts happening. I appreciate slow builds; this just needed more, sooner, and when it goes full-blown milquetoast slasher with wonky motivations, it lost me. They changed the ending for a wider audience appeal, and I don't think it was for the better.

Pretty solid thriller. James McAvoy is amazing as usual. How he tests and pushes the family is amazing. Ben (Scoot McNairy) is such an annoyingly chickenshit take-no-action character that he makes me want to throw things. Which of course leaves Mackenzie Davis to save the day often, and she does an okay job of it, but still this movie has a lot of characters doing fucking dumb things.

Brilliant performance by Mcavoy to go along with a captivating script. The movie never lost my attention despite some questionable decisions by the characters

Nothing groundbreaking as far as horror movies go, but the suspense is very well-executed. The writing is also decently tight and the directing is strong as well. The standout elements are the performances, which are all strong, but especially McAvoy and the children, Dan Hough and Alix West Lefler

Did not see the trailer and thoroughly enjoyed this movie. You have to view it as a horror/comedy to be the most entertained.

I would've maybe enjoyed it slightly more if I hadn't seen a trailer, but because I had, the twist wasn't really a twist, and made the movie feel unbearably slow. A lot of the movie also feels like it makes no sense, why put on a fake show for so long once the family arrives (they try to wave this away with one line of dialogue about liking to "bait" the prey). There tries to be some commentary about masculinity, honesty, and being polite / non-confrontational, but it doesn't really save it.

Fairly solid thriller/slow-burn of a movie. Don’t have the original to compare it to as of logging this, but James McAvoy was definitely the best thing going for it. Some contrivances and dumb decisions weaken it a little bit, as well as running just a tad too long, but good overall I’d say for Blumhouse.
