Special Agent

So very pedestrian. In a way, it's very much a "Bette Davis movie", seeing as she's the only woman in sight among a sea of men (and the most interesting of those, Jack LaRue, is killed off in the first half hour). But she doesn't get to show any of the many qualities that made her a star...she's an ordinary bookkeeper engaged to George Brent. *yawn!* And all the flag-waving patriotism gets to be a bit weird. It's not terrible, but there is no compelling reason to watch this.

Rather boring.

Not as exciting as I'd hoped. They somehow managed to eliminate most of the suspense of the gangster drama by worshiping he lawful side, portraying the brains of the mob too naive and making the danger too jolly. Bette Davis is alright, but it's a straight forward girl role and not one for Davis' more versatile acting skills. Ricardo Cortez is really the star of the movie in yet another sleazy role, but even he lack the flair to lift this movie above average.
