I can't objectively call it a great film, because the plot, characters, and humor are all migrated from Saturday morning cartoon land; wafer-thin and silly. But damn if it wasn't novel to be attacked with the most seizure-inducing, insane visuals in years. It's like eating a bag of Starburst through your eyeballs. Inane yet grin-inducing action scenes, Christina Ricci looking delicious, and a monkey round things out, leaving only one conclusion: This movie is Crank for 8 year olds.

Delightful and revolting expressionist trip with some heart buried under the all the camp and garish spectacle. Ignore the kid with the monkey and it's a gem for a live-action cartoon. Gotta love the on-the-nose naming conventions - bad guy is Mr. Royalton, dad is named Pops, the older brother who died in a crash is named Rex. You'd think Pops would wise up and name a kid Victor but no he goes on with "Speed" and "Sparky" like he's trying to taunt death.

WTF is this?!? Every single idea and choice Wachowskis make here is HORRENDOUS. Are these characters? Is this an action movie? The action doesn't have to be plausible (it ain't!) if it was at least interesting (sorry), or not BORING (you still here?)! I see lots of shiny colors and..? Expensive CGI used to make things look extra... fake? Why? The fastest thing in the movie was the villain explaining his motivation & plan. I couldn't follow it but I don't think the Bros. wanted me to! WHY?

I don't understand the hating. Technically, sound design and visual design are beyond amazing into another stratosphere. The Wachowski's legitimately made a live-action cartoon: schizophrenic, hyperrealistic, and steeped in videogame moralism. Goodman and Sarandon are absolutely brilliant (haters: watch again). The only lame parts come when the tension is broken for stupid kid/monkey humor. Throwing monkey shit aside, one of the best films of the year.

I came out of the theater thinking, "What the hell was that?" The enthusiastic exclamation in response can only be "Speed Racer!". Somehow the Wachowski brothers managed to faithfully recreate the spirit of the 60s cartoon. It's a mindfuck. A postmodern venture into irony of irony. A world that doesn't make any goddamn sense, but made "sensical" through the conceit of film-making.

The Wachowski's deserve credit for creating something entirely new here. It's a real life cartoon. Maybe too long and drawn out for kids and too simplistic to really engage adults it still has more then enough kinetic energy to pull it along. Visually stunning it feels like a complete vision. Plus John Goodman AND a monkey!

An underrated classic that will be taught in film schools 5 years from now. Tight narrative and hyperstimulating visuals cradle an enourmous heart. Take it from a 30 year old that hated the original cartoon: Speed Racer is what cinema is all about.

Embodies the spirit of its source material to such an extent that it's unbelievable it even got made - has there ever been a major studio production this stylistically bold before? Of course many will hate it for that very fact, but it's a complete blast if you can accept the extreme formalism of it all. The Wachowskis are two of the most ambitious directors alive today - and while they don't always succeed, they do here.

Speed Racer" stands as some of the zaniest entertainment you will ever see committed to film. The only compliment I can give it is that it's quite colorful, but the storyline, the special effects and the whole digital landscape is awful. If the highlight here is to be the onslaught of races featuring Emile Hirsch and Matthew Fox, yeah they'd be thrilling if didn't look like a poorly shot version of Pixar's "Cars." None of the race tracks have any sense in their design or much imagination. Bad.

Unlike anything you've likely ever seen, a feast for the eyes and ears. Really great fun, but has a few problems with pacing. The races are so exciting, it makes the dialogue scenes lethargic in comparison and the movie suffers a little.

I don't quite get it. By many conventional measures, this movie was not particularly "good". The plot is pretty cheesy, and the dialogue is not exactly Oscar-worthy. But I couldn't wipe the smile off my face while I was watching it. The Wachowski brothers clearly had a ball making this movie. The visual style of it is actually pretty incredible -- they basically went for "living cartoon universe", and they nailed it pretty well. Grab a big bucket of popcorn and buckle up.

I saw this on a plane and despite the RAVE reviews by the guy in front of me, I have to disagree. Half the time, I thought the whole thing was meant to be a joke. Did they really need to use so many cliches? The sneaky monkey/little brother duo for crying out loud? I think I already saw that act in Dunsten Checks In. And what the heck with the older brother faking his death, then getting plastic surgery to conceal his identity? This movie tries to make itself complex for no apparent reason.

Colorful and manic and indecipherable. The Wachowskis spend tanker-truckloads of money and emerge with something not far removed from what a meth-addled toddler would produce with a big sheet of butcher paper and two fistfuls of Crayolas. Watching this is is like drowning in Skittles. There's zero human element to the film, save the occasional hopeless cliche. This version of Speed Racer gives cartoons a bad name.

Despite being childish at times, it must be noted that this is a film of wonderful sights. There's just enough plot and characterization to get by on but what really makes this fun to watch is the astounding pacing and editing. Everything zips along in the coolest ways imaginable. All the hate this movie has accrued is undeserved.

Enjoyably hackneyed racing saga (which has odd echoes with FORD V FERRARI) is almost completely undone by its vomit-inducing set-design, looking like an ugly explosion at Johnny Depp's Wonka Factory. Alot of padding makes this an overlong journey, however the racing sequences are brilliantly staged and executed which still compensates in fits and starts. Nice work by Allam as the supercilious villian.

Flashy, colorful, and with a decent twist or two in the plot, it's still a very straightforward race-to-win against corporate bad guys... and that's just been done to death. The criticism for Speed Racer is completely unfounded. Out of all the adaptations of classic cartoons, Speed Racer is without a doubt the best. Fantastic, beautiful visuals and an elegant sense of style in the direction give Speed Racer that edge that you would expect from the Wachowski brothers. Hirsch is pitch-perfect as Speed Racer and the rest of the cast works great as well. The visuals, as you probably know, are the true treat here, but in general Speed Racer is simply awesome.

LOVED watching it in my local DLP theater. But it is EXCRUCIATING to watch off of a standard-def DVD. The way this movie was shot is leagues ahead of anything else, and seeing it in SD makes all of the innovative effects lose their splendor. My theory: the reason this movie did so poorly both critically & financially is because we're not 100% HD yet. The haters saw it in standard def.

Throwing away most of your brain cells and dropping into an alternate realm of flashing colours and dazzling CGI images in full HD would usually be something of which I can't approve, but Speed Racer is just about the only exception. It's all too obvious that the plotline is little more than wrapping, the acting is a tad iffy and some scenes get childish (kid/monkey), but who cares? It's an in your face, ballsy and nonsensicle revitilisation of a '60s cartoon. Get real and take it in context.

I'm usually one who dislikes combining CGI and live action in excess, especially when the movie tries to play it off as if what your seeing is real. This film did nothing to try and hide its use of CGI, in fact it was made to look the way it does and it works very well. I hated the kid and the monkey, but damn did I have fun with all the racing bits. I never thought I would enjoy watching a car race, if only NASCAR was this thrilling, then I'd understand people's love of it.

This film is way more intelligent than people give it credit for. It's a dazzling spectacle from start to finish without compromising its vision. The acting and dialog is hammed up as per the original cartoon and it is consistent with the strange surreal world they exist in. The complex CGI and strange characters only adds to the bizarre nature of this film.

I don't think it's possible to make something that more lives up to the billing of "live-action cartoon." The hyper-stylized effects and mile-a-minute pace make this a thrill ride from start to finish, and while I understand its detractors, I can't deny I had a blast with it (or at least the car chases). I regret not seeing it in theaters.

Colorful, to say the least. Color-overflowing, to say a little more. Color-engulfed. The live-action version of the late-Sixties made-in-Japan TV cartoon is of course, in this day and age, only partly live-action: real people like Hirsch, Ricci, Goodman, Sarandon, and Fox inserted into a world of total artifice, a world of Madison Avenue utopianism, pop color, ping-pong nonsequential editing, CGI landscapes, video-game action

Is Speed Racer worth seeing? Absolutely. It has such an interesting and unique visual style that will be unlike anything you've ever seen. Its races are incredibly exciting, too, which can be difficult to pull off when a good third, at least, of the film consists of racing scenes. I'll take an overlong and lackluster plot that is in service to creative visuals made by people who seem to love this material over a cynically produced movie with as much heart as a machine.

It's weird because I understand it's not for me - it's a PG rated movie with copious amounts of a pet monkey's hijinks - but I don't understand why it wasn't for me. What kid had nostalgia for this 60's cartoon? Obviously, this didn't connect with modern audiences and I feel if the Wachowski brothers had gone for a harder, adult mood this could've actually been interesting. Some of the racing is just eye-popping ridiculous fun but there's way more spinning of cars than racing.

Speed Races is nothing more than a harmless and enjoyable kids film. Following the success of the Matrix franchise, this adaption or the popular 60's animated series was a surprising but interesting choice for the Wachowski's Brothers next project. The Wachowskis's commitment to the cartoon Speed Racer translated into a whacky, ridiculous, fun ride. While the racing and the fight scenes in the film steal the show, the moments of sentimentality - while corny and contrived - never feel too self-serious, which worked much better in the context of the world of Speed Racer.

A colorist's orgasm. It's difficult for me to critique this as I would other films, as the incredible strength of it lies solely in a kinetic experience. To this end, it may be unparalleled; a perfect confluence of color and movement, tightly edited into transcendent action sequences. Everything else is inconsequential; the cast is overqualified and the film seems to be use them for the sole purpose of having real world textures and objects to paint every color of the day-glo rainbow. Brilliant.

Seems clear the filmmakers wanted to convey that aspects of what passes for reality are in fact a façade constructed by capital for its own ends. Here they direct that message at young children, who will probably enjoy the ride: there is something praiseworthy about embracing the artifice of digital imagery with such complete abandon. The plot may be utter formula but, in the film's favour, at least the rejection of "coolness" succeeded in garnering the odium of adolescents of all ages.
