One of the best action films. It's adrenalin-pumpingly fast-paced, with a premise as simple and pure as its title. Traven is no McClane (and Keanu no Bruce) but it almost matches the masterpiece that is 'Die Hard' for entertainment value. No need for the second ending, though.

'Speed' is a cool, slick, high concept action movie, that aspires to nothing more than being good ol' fashioned entertainment - and it is all the better for it! Keanu Reeves' obvious throwback to Buster Keatonesque acting is especially impressive, in that... hold on... *Touches ear piece* ..oh.. I've just been told that it's how his face works - or rather: doesn't.

Speed (aka 'The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down') just barely manages to overcome the awful acting, cliched dialogue and ludicrous stunts with some solid pacing to be mildy entertaining. What masochist casts Reeves and Bullock together anyway? I guess her annoying presence distracts from his 'acting'.

This is one of the better movies of not just Keanu's career, but also the 90's. It's simplistic, straight to the point, and just some dumb fun. It also so happens to co-star Sandra Bullocks and Dennis Hopper? Okay, this movie totally gets what it is and that's what makes it better than most movies in its own sub genre of cheesy action movies. It's the definition of "catching lightning in a bottle" it's just unfortunate that they actually tried turning this into a film franchise.

"Popquiz, hotshot!" A masterpiece of its genre, even if that genre is completely retarded. Hopper is just all kinds of fun as the diabolical villain, and the movie is unrelenting in its high intensity action. Right off the hop it grabs you by the throat with a great elevator sequence that I always forget about when thinking back on the movie. Bullock is bollocks, but Keanu is just right for a role like this. It's incredibly stupid, but undeniably entertaining.

Fun as it is, you've got to wonder about a director who saw Keanu Reeves' "delivery" and thought, "Yeah, that'll do, I don't think anyone will think that's laughably wooden." Seriously, when he sees Sandra strapped up to a bomb the best he can come up with is "Oh no" delivered in a manner which suggests he didn't quite grasp the nature of the 'explodey things bad' aspect of his job as a BOMB DISPOSAL OFFICER. Also contains some one-liners that make Arnie look like Noel Coward. Still fun though.

Pop quiz, hotshot: What is long but fast-paced, exciting but a bit ridiculous? Answer: a speeding bus that's able to jump a giant gap in a freeway without a ramp. Also, this movie. Down-to-earth Annie pairs well with Jack's cheesy action-machismo, but there are still a few groaner moments (see the aforementioned gap jump), and while the thrills pile on in a wonderful way ("What, you thought you needed another challenge or something?"), 3 major set pieces (elevator, bus, train) is one too many.

Despite having the title Speed, it has the slowest opening credits scene. In 1994, Jeff Daniels did this and Dumb & Dumber, and both characters had the same name. I'd like to think it's all a part of an extended universe. As a Canadian, I have no idea what 50mph is, so I had to look it up.

So you know, you can either be a dick about it and complain about how ridiculous this movie gets, or you can just enjoy the immensely exhilarating ride this high-concept actioner has to offer. You may've heard SPEED described as DIE HARD on a bus, and that's mostly true, but what you don't know about SPEED is that it's also the better movie. Leaner, faster, better scripted (not to mention less sadistic) -- with one ingenious sequence following another, and a winning, star-making performance by Keanu Reeves (yes, you read that right). Along with TERMINATOR 2, SPEED is the most exhilarating pure action movie of the 90s.

Characters are cheesy and half-dimensional, yes, but this is one of the most accomplished action films ever made. It manages to be all the things that the ad blurbs say about other movies: a shot of adrenalin, a sugar rush, etc. I'm almost always disappointed by movies w/ those ads but this one manages to deliver exactly that, and nothing more and - this is key- nothing less. Don't be fooled: this isn't a "more is more" action flick. It's a carefully crafted, perfectly-timed locomotive.

This is just a really really bad and stupid movie. People are trapped in a lift with bombs on top. So the first thing you do is check the other elevators, right? You're now smarter than the cops in Speed. Points for the driver's hair, the stupidity of it all and especially the hilarious ending. The bus has to jump 15 meters because the road isn't finished (lol). Later on they beat the bad guy but, guess what, the metro line isn't finished either. Lmao.

Agreeable, if unremarkable, action thriller is a cut above the pack due to its slick direction, the obvious chemistry between Bullock and Reeves, and a juicy villain in Hopper. It was a major comeback role for him, and he is fun to watch, even if it isn't as gonzo as some of his other performances. De Bont stages many tense scenes in moving vehicles, and he keeps a tight grip on the frenetic pace. Yost's dialogue is occasionally gimmicky (pop quiz!), but overall it's harmless escapist fare.

It's not particularly smart, but if you can't just sit back and enjoy yourself, you're really boring. Its easy to pick on the film because the acting is awful, the script's rubbish and some of the scenes are cringe worthy. But fuck it! I like it. It does exactly what it says on the tin! Even 16 years on it remains a good thriller, with solid chunk of suspense thrown in, and recently so few films that advertise themselves as "suspense/thrillers" actually have any thrills or suspense at all, that this will only endear itself more to me with age, because it is genuinely quite an exciting film.

It's been a while since I saw this, but the things I remember most are the pace being relentless, the stunts looking dangerous and exciting, and the music complementing the action very well. The defined three-act structure works really nicely too. Even without the iconic bomb-on-bus scenario, you would have the makings of a good movie. Keanu convinces as the action man but might have struggled without Sandy's panicky support. Very well-directed and gripping movie from a man who knows action.

If you take it for what it is, Speed is a lot of fun. Yes, the plot is paper thin and serves mainly to set up the action-packed premise, but once the bus gets going, the movie rarely lets up in its pace and you kind of forget how improbable and dumb it is. Add in some appropriately cheesy one-liners, some effective practical effects, and Keanu showing those early flashes of action stardom, and Speed is a really fun vintage 90's thriller.

There are a lot of elements that *could* work, but aren't given a chance. The actors strive to pull the script towards real human beings on their daily commute thrust into a life-or-death struggle, and the occasional funny or relatable line really lands, but the plot is too much the abstract idea of a 90s action movie to function. Plus, the pacing starts with half an hour of little to no speed and ends with multiple redundant climaxes, and Hopper plays less a mastermind and more a shitty dad.

This movie is pure rubbish for an endless number of reasons, but this is the biggest one: being the plot stupidly simple the writer(s) had to complicate the situation with characters behaving like decerebrate sociopath monkeys, and I hate this solution with all of me. Speed, a social commentary on the inadequacy of LA's transport infrastructure in the 90's. The film is incredibly cheesy with mediocre writing and a few set pieces that are a little too unbelievable, but it's fast-paced and oddly gripping, making it surprisingly enjoyable. Reeves and Bullock have enough chemistry to keep you invested, and the subplot with Daniels is pretty decent. "Speed" has a clever gimmick of a premise and manages to maintain momentum thanks to the very good direction, convincing acting and excellent technical aspects. It starts off with the very tense elevator scene and then segues into the main - and best - part of the film, which is just fascinating, before signing off with the slightly more low-key, callback-drenched final act. Because of that it probably doesn't go off on the highest of notes, but has already proven itself a hell of an experience.
