The Spider-Man comic book series has always had a distinguishable storytelling formula. The character is part Zorro (using a masked persona to fight evil) & teen detective (solving crimes while coming of age in unique circumstances). Rami completely translates the tone by using his horror comedy skills to make a swashbuckling Teen Wolf movie. Still, the action sequences are average and it could've used a stronger villain. But the impact gave superhero films a needed legitimacy.

I think this still holds up really well. Maguire is good, it's the writing itself that doesn't have enough wisecracking that a lot of Spidey fans typically want. Willem Dafoe is pitch perfect as Norman Osborne and outshines pretty much everyone, and the last fight is excellent. Not a perfect Spider-Man movie, but it's quite cinematic and very entertaining. 2022 Edit; this movie gets better for me with each viewing. Still imperfect, but still quite good.

I'm a huge fan of Raimi due to the Evil Dead franchise, but this is almost a perfect Spider Man movie. Maguire is great, as he resembles Parker, but a bit too old. Dafoe as Green Goblin was perfect, as he really had some chilling moments. It's very mature tone and balance of Peter Parker and Spider Man was quite surprising to me. Raimi's talent goes beyond that however. As he very artistic in his shots and cinematography. I don't think there could've been a better director for this.

The villian is too Power Ranger. The hero is too TMNT. Mary Jane is too Kirsten Dunst. Somehow all these things setup what is probably my favorite Superhero movie in the sequel, but this one just didn't grab me with it's eight legs and arachnid eyes...oh yeah, he just got the webs and the sense.

You can always tell when a comic movie is made by a guy who loves comics. This shows Raimi's knowledge and passion for his subject. A great telling of what Spiderman is in the Marvel universe. Fabulous casting (although I'm not sold on Dunst), great effects, costumes were handled very well. Definately one of the best comic movies made.

(after repeat viewings) It threads a very thin line between serious and just plain silly, yet always keeps things neatly balanced and consistently enjoyable. The pacing is off the charts, J.K. Simmons steals every scene he's in and Kirsten Dunst's cleavage made me transition into a man faster than my bar mitzvah.

With the benefit of hindsight it's hard 2 say how fans could've wished 4 better given the 25 years of development hell it took 2 get this into theaters. CGI caught up, Cameron & Raimi wisely gave us organic webshooters, & what could have only been a cluttering Doc Ock was thankfully removed. In the end, the filmmakers smartly chose to stick with Lee & Ditko's original vision, which does mean an unfortunate predictability for fans of the comic who'd read this origin at least a dozen times already

If it wasn't for this movie blowing all financial expectations out of the water we likely never would've gotten a Dark Knight or MCU. On rewatch, however, I realize this is also one of the most socialist superhero films ever as well: Besides Peter Parker's working-class background contrasted with wealthy antagonists like Osborn & Jameson, the climax where New Yorkers save Spider-Man by throwing trash off the bridge at Green Goblin is working-class solidarity against the 1% in cinematic form.

Spiderman was touted as a 'new' kind of comic book film that was more faithful to its source material, but that's just another way of saying that it lacks imagination. In retrospect, it owes more to Donner and Burton than generally acknowledged and appears to be riffing wholesale on key scenes and moments from their work in the genre. Its lighthearted touch is welcome in the current environment of drabness, but it's an amiable time killer that only really comes alive in the final reel.

Like most comic book origin stories the film has to take so much time giving the character's backstory that the villain gets rushed. Because Spider-man had backstory that involves him discovering his powers it took even longer. Luckily the discovery scenes, the action scenes, and the effects of him swinging throughout the city keep the movie very entertaining even without a very compelling villain. It's box-office success started the mass influx of comic book movies.

The one thing I took out of this is that Tobey Maguire is a very good actor. Not usually a big fan of the whole comic book thing, but he had me buying into the character from the get go. Kristen Dunst tries to hurt the movie with her annoying cackling screams, but it didn't work. I still found myself pretty much tuned in throughout to see how this would end. I thought the story was easy to follow and didn't lag either. Good show Peter Parker.

One of my favorite superhero movies, partially because the flawed, humanistic Spider-Man is so much more likable than most of his peers. Thrilling action, great effects, and a lot of laughs make it a genuine crowd-pleaser. Kirsten Dunst is a little weak and a few beats are melodramatic, but I forgive it for its minor missteps.

This was the model for so many later superhero movies, and when it's doing standard action, drama or romance, many of them do it better. But when it leans into its own sense of exaggerated, comic-booky reality, it pulls off moments of powerful emotion and spectacle that few others have managed to touch. Mugging to the camera, doing Power Rangers kicks, cutting to a sudden closeup, turning people into skeletons - it takes enormous commitment to pull off, but if you do, it's compelling as hell.

Choosing Willem Dafoe as the villain is a brilliant piece of casting. Dude can go either way, and makes the dual personalities really shine. Spider-Man represents America, which must have been a post-9/11 addition, as he hangs around a few flags, just in case you are ever in doubt. Also, if he's so New York, why didn't we get a scene where he says, "Hey, I am webbin' here!" That's a little New York humour.

After Spider-Man: No Way Home I got interested in watching the older installments again. And I have to say: on re-watch, this one holds up extremely well! A to-the-point and semi-credible origin-story, and focused on just one villain whose story is deftly interwoven with Peter Parker's. An incredibly efficient and effective movie, with lots of interesting small touches. Like when Peter has to choose to save MJ *or* a cablecar full of kids, both eyes reflects a different 'target' dropping away.

Maguire's lead turn adds consistent melodramatic cheese right from his opening voiceover ("Who am I? You sure you want to know? The story of my life is not for the faint of heart") to his last one ("This is my gift, my curse") but it feels authentic to the awkward, angsty, coming-of-age teen experience and works well with the other campy comic-book elements (Dafoe and Simmons leap off the page with their performances). Fun action and quirky humour ("up, up, and away web!") top things off.

Watched this from DVD, before the second movie came to theaters. Compared to other superheros, spider-man is normal guy, who's life is turned upside down after taking Pfizer jab... sorry, after spider bite. Well, those two are easy to mix up. Luckily the hero maintains its humanity and that makes this movie special.

Looking back at that movie in 2021 hindsight, it's actually pretty bad. The CGI is lame, the writing is shallow, it has a lot of bad moments. But I can't forget how cool this movie was when it came out, it's more than just the ancestor to modern superhero movies, it's also a very quotable very fun movie full of memorable moments. No matter how bad it truly is, I can't hate on it.

Along with X-Men, Spider-Man was one of those movies that brought the superhero genre back to life after the Batman movies fizzled in the 90s. I remember loving it at the time, and it mostly holds up. There are a few flaws though. Maguire's Spider-Man isn't funny enough and some of the CGI has not aged the best. Still a very enjoyable superhero movie though and among my favorites.

Spidey swinging through the city was awesome and believable. but upon rewatching, the performance by tobey doesn't stand up as well as i thought and the twisting of the story to give him biological webshooters is just wrong. dont even get me started on the green goblin rangers power armor.

Ever since I was a kid - being a huge Spider-Man fan - I dreamed of a Spider-Man movie, and after the rumors started we still had to wait years. This was a good effort, and I was mostly pleased. Seeing him swing around town and beat up bad guys was sure a treat. I liked Tobey and Dafoe. And J.K. Simmons as JJJ was the best casting move of all Hollywood history. But that ridiculous Green Goblin get-up... ouch. He was like something out of the Power Rangers.

It's cool to hate on the original Spider-Man these days. The Green Goblin's costume looks goofy and he talks in an exaggerated manner. Tobey Maguire is low-key to a fault. I guess everyone's image of Spider-Man is different than mine, but I enjoyed most of the performances in this film (especially Dafoe, and the great J.K. Simmons, who no one will ever better as JJJ). The fault in the film is the lack of Spideysnark, which is starker after Garfield's performances.

A classic superhero film that I always enjoy revisiting, even after the MCU films. Something about Tobey Maguire's portrayal of Spider-Man is just so compelling and hard to look away from. This was really a pivotal moment for superhero films, and you can tell It really inspired many that came after. A perfect amount of camp and some of Raimi's signature storytelling elements make this a highly enjoyable film to watch. I give 8 Willem Dafoe grins out of 10.

Not as bad as I remembered. Watching a second time I found the non-Spiderman elements of Peter's life to be more engaging that the superhero business. Still don't like the SFX, especially the swinging around buildings stuff - it has dated badly. Having never read the comics the Green Goblin comes across as a one-note cackling villain and the plot leading to the finale has been done better many times before. Enjoyable, not great

A good super hero movie but it needs more humour of Spider-Man. Some of the over dramatic dialogue bothers me a while but other vise the acting works well. I hate the Green Goblin's costume (even in comics) but in this movie it doesn't matter. The movie would rock 100 % if they would follow Parker more close. Now there's just too much of monologue after another and the scenes feel too separate.

Sam Raimi's horror style is actually put to good use in what could have easily been a straight-forwardly shot film. What carries this movie is the decent story, fun atmosphere, and witty dialog that remains faithful to the comic. What doesn't work so well is the CGI which didn't look all that great back in 2002 either. Now the CGI just looks completely dated and it's hard to watch the movie on blu-ray without being distracted by it. Overall it's a fun movie but nothing really memorable in hindsight.

There is not enough space in this mini-review to list the things wrong with this. The writing is horrid. It has a puddle-deep plot and characters. The special effects may be inventive, but they're still awful for 2002. It's cheesy and camp, and it manages to be even more predictable than regular Hollywood-fare. Dunst seems to have left her acting at home. 1 or 2 incredible moments and some good action, but there really isn't any value whatsoever. Honestly can't see what anyone sees in this.

I like a superhero movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. Hero comics are for children, and all this nonsense about giving them a "dark" edge just makes them even sillier. Fortunately, this one doesn't do that. Goofy costumes, corny one-liners, cackling villains -- that's how it should be. There are some weak points, though. The dialogue doesn't have to be THIS bad, the special effects are subpar, the Matrix-style moves have to go, and the don't-fuck-with-New-York stuff makes me groan.

This is one of the first comic book movies to really make viewers feel like there were in a world where there could be people like Spider-Man. Maguire does a terrific job of making Spider-Man/Peter Parker a real person. You'll believe that he's troubled, meek, and can't talk to girls, but he can lift bulldozers. The problem is that too many other characters were too melodramatic. For the most part, it's a great coming of age/origin film for the super popular comic book character. Awesome!

The movie has enough moments of pure movie adrenaline to tingle your spider-sense, and the cast is quite strong, but something is not quite right here. Primarily, the fact that the Goblin outfit design is clunky and awful and makes the costumed scenes between hero and villain play out like watching a kid play with action figures. Make no mistake though, it is a good movie, just not near as good as its sequel.

Not a bad adaptation of everyone's favorite webslinger. Raimi does some interesting things visually and Maguire is pretty good at being an awkward goof as Peter Parker.

The first half was very promising. The way Peter created his Spiderman persona and the childlike wonder he displays when using his powers for the first time were really fun to watch. Willem Dafoe was great as both Osborn and Green Goblin. The second half is where things got bad. They made Mary Jane a damsel in distress whose entire purpose was getting into trouble and waiting for Peter to save her. And the ending was just so weird and out of place. It's a nice film, but it has many problems.

This first film of the franchise is actually pretty good. Aside from retelling the origin story that any comic book fan has heard hundreds of times (Batman also suffers from this), Sam Raimi's vision is colorful, kinetic, and doesn't take itself too seriously. Tobey Maguire's portrayal as a slightly dorky Peter Parker who must learn to be a super hero works here, as does James Franco's tortured Green Goblin. It isn't particularly deep, but it is pretty fun.

Nostalgia glasses on: 10/5 stars! Glasses off: This was the relative "beginning" of the modern superhero drama. The OG of the MCU (despite it not existing at the time). Yes, it had the classic pitfalls of an origin story. But I dare you to watch this without smiling, laughing, and rooting for Spidey. This was probably the only movie I remember going absolutely bananas when my mom and dad told my sister and I that we were going to see. What's that? I have a tear in my eye right now

The story is good and it does have good characters. I think this movie does have some shortcomings, but its still good. I recommend this movie for anyone who wants to watch a good story with some fun aspects to the character.

It was probably the best superhero movie ever made at time of release. Seeing Spidey swing through the streets of New York for the first time in film history, and then again with MJ, got me emotional. A lot of great humour. JK Simmons is the best casting in film history. And a bit of "I love NY" patriotism after 9/11 really hit home. Over 20 years later, it's still a stone-cold classic.

Maguire’s Peter Parker is believably and amusingly awkward and his earnest growth into a superhero is genuinely charming, but the final act drags on for too long and too much is dated (homophobia, CG spidey) for its climax to remain as engaging as its rising action.

Well, rewatching these after 20 years and MCU, you understand how great a director Raimi is. If MCU is a cinematic universe, this series is a perfect example of how a comic book should be brought to film. It is a master class in cinematography, directing and editing and how a comic book should be brought to the screen.

I forgot Peter's darker side poking through in it in numerous scenes, and it is kinda interesting to compare with the two following spideys who don't have that

A pretty dated superhero classic.The dialogue as well as the acting is laughably cheesy,the high-school actors are way to old to be highschoolers and a lot of the directing choices also are very odd when viewed in 2021.Defoe's incredibly over the top performance steals the show and the finale action scene is actually pretty intense and brutal (despite the dated CGI which is painfully obvious throughout).It's not without its redeeming qualities but they don't manage to truly save it.
