Saw tries to do like a Se7en type movie. I'd be lying if I said I hated it - it lulled me into sort of a pleasant stupor watching Jigsaw Jr roast pigs like a Hawaiian luau. But still, easy twist, not enough traps/games, mystery plays out like CBS cop procedural episode. Marisol Nichols is crazy fucking hot for her age, what the hell, she's a pushing-50 mom of a high schooler IRL, why she look hotter than she did on 24 back in the mid 00s??

Not the worst, but far from the best. Script could be better, Bousman’s erratic directing is too frequent, flashbacks too frequent, pacing has no brakes, and the characters (minus maybe Minghella) are either annoying or bland. I did however, love the cop perspective with them being picked off, the guessing game (which was admittedly very obvious), and the shrapnel trap. It’s a shame, as this really looked interesting, but it needed a better director/writer to nail what it was going for.

Not bad, not bad at all. We have master of puppets in this film. And to be honest, it was better than most of the Saw sequels. At least, there are new ideas and different perspectives in Spiral. The story also works very well in the first half. But it seems to me that everything falls apart in the last half hour. The ending was really weak.

I love that this was a passion project for Chris Rock. Also love in the flashback scenes, Rock has a goatee and Jackson has a moustache. This film just barely keeps the nu-metal music video aesthetic of the first 7 films, but makes it more visually palatable. I have seen all the Saw films, but they now exist in my brain as one congealed mess, but this feels like a very middle-of-the-road entry to the franchise.

This franchise has been in a tailspin since its inception. Each film takes the series lower and lower as the attempts to recapture the original's magic just go round and round. The bottoming trajectory of the ongoing story wraps its way to a new low with this offshoot. Not to sound cliche, but you could say that the Saw films themselves are on a downward coil, or more a helix or perhaps convolution. I can't find the right word for it.

I probably liked it more than I should because it's the first theatre viewing I had in the near post pandemic era. Much more in the vein of the first saw than the other ones. Twists and turns and a goes on the back burner. Wokeified saw is a pretty funny concept

I think they realized that the torture porn days are over so the traps aren't the main focus anymore where they're getting tortured for like 10 minutes straight. They kind of breeze through the traps. Of course there's still some crazy gore but not like it was. Weird they decided to still go with the dirgy greyed/browned out so it still looks like it's trapped in an mid 2000s numetal video. Still had a decent amount of fun at the theatres (first time in 6 months) and new C Rock standup

Quite an odd one in that it's not a true sequel, not a reboot, not a retread and not a glorious new direction for the Saw franchise. Rock is unsurprisingly terrible in the dramatic moments, the main twist might as well have had flashing lights pointing to it it was so obvious, but Rock and Jackson's comedic chops are frequently used to good effect, there's a fun first film callback moment, and the climax is so cheesy it's laughable. So Spiral does entertain though probably not quite as intended

I think I'm only giving it a passing grade because while it was happening I was curious about who it was, so that allowed me to enjoy it. That counts for something. Looking back it's not much of a movie. Even while watching it I saw the flaws: Rock is not good here, the style/atmosphere was so try-hard, the traps kinda sucked (not that I care that much about that), and it tries to fuse comedy and attitude in there where it isn't necessary. The first Saw was tense, warts and all, this is not.

I don’t want to alarm anyone but Chris Rock is an atrocious dramatic actor, he brings bad buddy cop comedy energy to this. Please let me know what other dying franchises have surprise books to draw last grasp sequels from because I will certainly thumb through it. We have gone through all the horror franchise sequel nonsense hooks but one for saw and baby: “Houston ... I want to play a game”

Just misses the mark. Some story elements could be switched around, maybe add a bit more comedy to the second half of the film, and some better traps and this would be a decent film. As is, it's one of the better Saws, at least.

Not the most impressive start for a new series. Average and easily guessable plot. Weak traps. The last "trap" (or, how the protagonist handles it) was hugely annoying. But I enjoyed the attempt to make it into a detective film.

I'm a Saw Fanboy so this review will be worthless, but it's a great entry to the franchise. It's more of a spiritual sequel to Se7en than a Saw movie. Between a better integration of the main trap plot and police work than previous Saw's and Chris Rock throwing himself 100% into the movie (even if sometimes it results in overacting); Spiral feels fresh for the 9th movie in the series. The Traps this time are just average, but at least shot well. The twist is the weakest of the series.

Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Rock can't save a poor script and weak direction. The best parts of Saw are the obscene gore and John Kramer. The gore in Spiral is alright but no John Kramer and I'm not interested.
