I actually really enjoyed Split! The pacing is slower than I thought it would be, but James McAvoy is amazing in all of his roles and accents and very convincing. Anya Taylor-Joy was pretty good as well but overshadowed by him. M. Night Shayamalan script and directing are actually pretty decent here. His choice of music and camera angles made it genuinely creepy all the way up to the stomach-punching end. This is worth watching!

Sadly, this didn't really do much for me. Therapy/therapist scenes were just excessive exposition, some scenes feel unnecessary and I can't help but think a few narrative choices were a little misjudged. However, McAvoy's performance keeps you invested I suppose.

Shyamalan provides an interesting look on the concept of trauma and it's impact on the human mind. James McAvoy's performance at times is worth the price of admission. The audience is asked to slightly suspend their disbelief on some of the science behind the controversial dissociative identity disorder, and is rewarded greatly in the films finale and last second reveal that re-contextualizes the movie.

Plays out like a demo reel for mcavoy...based on which he'd unlikely ever get a job again. Either this movie is really dumb or i am. Or i've been too drilled on metaleveling by "similar" predecessors. Anyway, other than taylor-joy's boobs wiggling around, i did not get much out of it.

Good movie led by an interesting premise and very good acting. The script does at times lack some emotional depth, which it tries to undeservedly get by having certain themes around abuse without doing much to delve into them. Too many of the scenes with the psychiatrist were a device to give the audience small amounts of info to keep up the suspense instead of actual psychiatry. The "twist" (for lack of a better word) ending made me roll my eyes and groan.

James McAvoy is an amazing talented actor who is able to split between multiple personalities on the fly. He gave live to each of them (helped by the script, which chooses to focus on around 5 instead of having 23 of them share screen time). Anya Taylor-Joy holds her own and is starting to prove she could be the next big horror actress. The ending "twist" is hard to recommend, if I even attempt to explain why I'll spoil it. But it barely makes/breaks the movie so not all bad.

Call me old fashioned but I preferred his movie about putting kids in ovens. The split personality gimmick should've died off the minute Steve Urkel made his adjustments to Cool Juice resulting in the much more stable Boss Sauce.

Shyamalan comes back in a big way, esp for fans of his 2nd film. The writing is masterful if only for the way it's not only impossible to know exactly what's going to happen next, but given his rep for twists, it's hard not to wonder -given the storyline - if you can even trust what you've seen. It's the kind of story that's easy to screw up in the 3rd act, but he makes sure the pay off's as satisfying as what came before. And of course, McAvoy's performance(s) is/are great

Easy to see why this is considered Shyamalan's come back movie. It's a capable thriller in its own right, but add in an amazing performance by James McAvoy and an ending that comes as a bit of a surprise and it is even better. I thought some aspects were a bit predictable, but it had enough interesting moments and was well done enough to not be brought down by it too much.

James McAvoy carries off the multiple personality acting quite well, but everyone else is pretty blank. Doesn't quite live up to its premise. Never really hits the proper suspense notes, and plot 'twist' is obvious a mile away. Weak third act. Also features a bad M Night self-insertion scene for no good reason, and a terrible attempt to link into M Night Universe with Bruce Willis cameo at the end.

the final scene of this movie is one of the best fucking twists of all time. I'm not even joking. the rest of the movie is good too! McAvoy legitimately got snubbed for an Oscar, probably because he's in a movie where he plays a 9-year-old boy named Hedwig

Split is a movie that doesn't accomplish its main goals. It isn't scary or thrilling. M. Night Shyamalan might still be able to be a good director, but he needs to divorce himself from his pen and focus on screenplays written by other people. These characters are far too lacking, and the story far too dull - with constant stalls in its forward momentum - to add up to anything good. James McAvoy tries his best to save it, but to no avail. Split is another Shyamalan failure.

M. Night's best movie since Unbreakble (easily). The Shyamalan cameo scene and the exposition by way of the therapist scenes are the only negative spots (and they really didn't take me out of it at all, to be honest), but McAvoy does some of his best work here. I really enjoyed it.

Shyamalan has this fascinating, internal tension in his films where his direction is smarter than the stories he gives life to. Split is a pitch-perfect genre film that should embarrass purists and imitators by how booksmart it is - and just how brilliant McAvoy is (Oscar caliber?). But the strict adherence to genre calls attention to all the nasty subtexts that inform it. Deep down, you know Shyamalan is smarter than that.

Wow, what suspense and what a performance by McAvoy. Great scenes and great shots (framing, zooms, dolly and length of shots). All the details seems to be in place. There is a realism to Split that makes the horror even more horrifying. When the monster is human and when your hear about such kidnappings in the real world, it's all the more nerve wrecking. I can't wait to watch Glass.

Shyamalan's come-back finds him puttering along in mid-gear with a contrived screenplay with its own identity issues - not scary or gory enough to be a slasher, and too patently ridiculous to succeed as a slow burn or even a halfway serious study of mental illness (a choice that a character external to the kidnapping makes at the end of the second act is unforgivably contrived in its stupidity). McAvoy is the main reason to watch this; his tour-de-force whacko is a fine and poignant villain.

Split firmly invests itself in the final girl trope, subverting only its interpretation of purity. At this point in Shyamalan career a twist ending is expected, but the film plays out linearly and is almost comparable to Unbreakable. The action is competently directed, but it's McAvoy's performances that make this solid thriller all the more enjoyable. Cleverly, the coda leaves fans on a high note, but one might consider it as reward for slower paced film (or for After Earth).

Between this and The Visit, Shyamalan seems to have made progress in his quest to get his groove back. Split boasts decent atmospheric horror, and Taylor-Joy has a perfectly expressive face for her role. But the film rests entirely on mocking the shit out of the mentally ill, with transphobia on top. Shyamalan paces the script to have us laugh at McAvoy's illness for the first hour then recoil in horror in the last 30 minutes. I regret watching such a hateful film.

I could go 23 different ways on this movie. Pros: for the genre, done well. J.McAvoy & Ana Taylor-Joy acted exquisitely. Pure, unapologetic M.Night. Cons: insensitive. Lacks purpose or emotional connection/resolution, and failed to offer the cleverness and rationale that M.Night did well with in the past. Teased at many concepts of female abuse without properly de-glorifying it; surely being a pipe dream film for sexual molestors. So in the end... I'm pretty split on it.

Not even ashamed of my love. Now, the twist took this from an 80 to a 90 because I can't remember the last time an ending amped me up as much as this. I also think McAvoy might be my early dark horse for best performance because he was dynamic. Sometimes I can't tell if Night is trying to be funny or his shit writing tendencies come out, much like in The Visit, but I can't even deny that I don't care cuz it's fun. I haven't seen a film as ill-judged as this one in a very long time. The way McAvoy's Carry On accents and mannerisms are interspersed with flashbacks to honest-to-God child rape is nothing short of astonishing. Fun thriller with good performances from McAvoy and Taylor-Joy. Some elements of the film are a bit forced, trying to cram in moments that supposedly add depth to the characters but really come off as solely for audience shock value. On the whole though it fits together pretty well and much better than M Night's recent output.

Here we have a claustrophobic, small setting film, akin to '10 Cloverfield Lane', 'Room', 'Hidden' or a plethora of others. However, the films I've named conjure a far more believable exposition for the theme's touched on in 'Split'. Those being; female abduction in 'Room', captor psychosis in '10 Cloverfield Lane' and the supernatural element in 'Hidden', which coincidentally, has a decent twist to finish up with. Something I was expecting here given MNS's reputation, but did not transpire.

The M. Night Shyamalan mythos is one of frustrating inconsistency. His early work is arguable genius; some of his latter films, abject trash. Split is far closer to good/great M. Night than bad M. Night. James McAvoy is an experience all on his own, and maybe his work alone drags this admittedly-intriguing premise into truly enjoyable territory. And when the movie becomes truly thrilling, when the horrific-ness begins, when the movie COULD fall off the rails, it doesn't. Way to go, Shyamalan.

Classic example of trailer expectations - reality of the movie. It was overall enjoyable, mostly due to McAvoy's performance (as usual with his movies), but then again it took to no direction at all - it was neither really psychological, nor a horror, nor a superhero movie. Additionally, I am dissatisfied with the Unbreakable part, as it would have been much better, if a sequence is made, to be about other DID people like our boy here.

Split makes for a fun little popcorn flick, that also has some actual depth to it as well. McAvoy's performance is to be heralded and Taylor-Joy more than keeps up with him, even if the other supporting actors are a bit lackluster. And Shyamalan is on point here too, surprisingly. Between this and The Visit we might be seeing a return to form for his writing, hopefully catching up to his exceedingly good knack for visuals.

Split's plot is intriguing yet unfortunately - and somewhat predictably - poorly executed. After an interesting 'what's happening here?' set up the writing takes a nosedive into lazy throwaway popcorn nonsense, the biggest gripe being McAvoy's hammy drama-school multiple personalities (or lack thereof). There are other qualms too: we're never given a reason to care about the girls; the overt references to paedophilia that don't seem to go anywhere; that dodgy ending... As shit as The Village.

James McAvoy does a pretty good job playing very different personalities. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a personality that can save boring films. The plot is slow for a large portion and not in a good slow-burn way. The girls are just terrible actors and I couldn't care less if they die. That might be the main issue - I couldn't care for anyone. Shyamalan fails to create a emotionally gripping scenes/characters and the weight of this failure can't be lifted by just one good actor.

For every typically awful Shyamalan trope like forcing connections no one else would make, the awkward delivery of even more awkward dialogue or the really unintuitive scene compositions, we're actually given a genuinely suspenseful and interesting movie. As it goes on the characters finally start to display actual emotions and behave as people really would (mostly), and McAvoy manages to make even the cringy moments worth sitting through. Actually gives me hope for "Glass" in 2019.

Demonizes mental health issues, pointlessly leers at and tortures teenage girls for the audience's pleasure, and uses abuse victim-hood as a pseudo super power (twice!), without actually dealing with any of these issues in any substantive way other than tired cliche. And that's to say nothing of the generally poorly-paced and clumsy writing. The final "reveal" scene is one of the cheesiest, most poorly-directed and written scenes that I've seen in a while.

Dug the slow pace, Shyamalan moves his camera well, and the exposition-as-plot actually works up to a point, but the spell gets broken pretty thoroughly in the third act. The goal of the antagonist remains nebulous and internal, the action that's been hyped up through the whole movie is underwhelming, and the wet fart of an ending leaves too many threads dangling for a gratuitous lead-in to a sequel. The penultimate line of dialogue is one of Shyamalan's worst, and that's saying a lot.

More interesting than actually good.
