Courageous Cheung (Sammo Hung) has a reputation for taking on any dare, no matter how foolish it may be, in order to prove his unabashed bravery. Though his friends often take advantage of his misguided machismo by luring him into dubious dares in which they attempt to scare him and laughingly ridicule him, Cheung is placed in very real danger after the Master -- the man his wife is having an affair with -- hires an evil Taoist priest to kill him in what Cheung at first considers a routine test of bravery. What it might've lacked in the amount of truly impressive action scenes, it made up for with the kind of 'wait, what' content I am a sucker for. Sammo Hung channeling a monkey spirit, coffin-fu, unwitting zombie-spooning and a climax consisting of two priests on extended scaffolding spitting fire at each other? Oh movie, it's like you know me all too well.

Coming a mere three years after Hung's first starring role, and his directorial debut, he was a rising star, but he still had a long way to go before becoming Da Goh. It's a big leap to go from a respected choreographer to a renowned director or actor, and by essentially creating the Jiangshi genre in the process, it's nothing short of incredible. With all that said, this is yet another example of a first that is certainly not the best--and I've only seen a couple Jiangshi movies to compare.

This movie has everything! Sammo gets tricked into fighting a vampire (twice!), Sammo fights his own possessed hand, Sammo gets possessed by the Monkey God, there's a Wizard duel, hopping vampires, slapstick comedy and more incredible kung fu!

Like an Olympian god's chamber pot accidentally kicked from the firmament, raining its ambrosial contents down upon the parched Earth below, I learned of this movie via a Criticker message accidentally sent to me instead of the proper party. And as I wipe the godly excreta from my surcoat, I count myself blessed, as my first Sammo experience was unexpectedly delightful. 80% Chinese summoning rituals, 19% rubber corpses. Come for the adultery, stay for the ho-hum acquisition of dog's blood.

What better choice for a Halloween movie night than Sammo Hung's creepy kung-fu comedy? Though it wasn't actually super creepy, Sammo was in good form and I was amused throughout. Plenty of comedically-choreographed kung-fu of different styles (including corpse-fu as I call it, which I thought was actually pretty cool) and some funny dialogue to boot. The ending was really darn dumb, though.

It's a bit too silly for my tastes, but I was certainly entertained and that ending is pretty crazy.

For me this is a fun and bizarre watch which enthralls and makes me laugh. This movie set the stage for all Kung Fu/Horror/Comedies to come and there were a lot.

It's got jiangshi, wizard battles, kung fu, and Sammo Hung doing his classic lovable goof. Not sure what else anyone could want in an 80s Hong Kong horror. It's mostly comedy, but manages to get pretty dark at times. I'm still trying to decide if the last seconds are intended to be funny or scary. I like scary better so let's go with that

Most movies have a long setup before action starts, this film wastes little time setting up the story, and is non stop action and physical comedy, which never gets repetitive, because there is so many genres and situations crammed in. It's all thanks to by young and charismatic Sammo Hung, who wrote the film, directed it and not only displays spectacular ability as a kung-fu actor, but also shines as a slapstick comedian. I have a feeling that he was hurt by some lady when he wrote this film:)

Not the greatest of martial arts films, but certainly one of the better ones. Slapstick horror meets some pretty impressive fighting skills.

Such a bizarre ending to an odd film. Not enough comedy for my taste but action by the bucket full and Sammo is damn good fun, great action, okay comedy, and even includes one of those bizarre hopping ghosts

It's entertaining but A Chinese Ghost Story & Zu: Warriors of the Magic Mountain are better.

Points deducted for the chicken, but then again points added for the awesome ending. Humor is not great, combat choreography is.

This movie has some script issues and a bizarre final scene. Many of the action scenes in this film are clever and very well done. Overall I would recommend this movie due to the fun action scenes.

One of the rare kung fu/martial arts action movies where the end fight was not the highlight for me. Especially from this time period. Enjoyed the whackiness of these Taoist priests kind of fighting their own battle of honor and greed and Sammo really just mixed up in the mess. The fights against the corpses were my fav parts before the end got a little goofy for my tastes with the monkey sound effects.
