CIA operative Nathan Muir (Redford) is on the brink of retirement when he finds out that his protege Tom Bishop (Pitt) has been arrested in China for espionage. No stranger to the machinations of the CIA's top echelon, Muir hones all his skills and irreverent manner in order to find a way to free Bishop. As he embarks on his mission to free Bishop, Muir recalls how he recruited and trained the young rookie, at that time a sergeant in Vietnam, their turbulent times together as operatives and the woman who threatened their friendship. This thriller is taut! Redford is ideal for these sort of roles where he's smarter then everyone else in the room but for some reason has a chip on his shoulder.

An extremely entertaining spy-thriller from Tony Scott featuring two great performances from Redford and Pitt, as well as a solid two hours of suspense.

Tony uses flashbacks in order not just to back the story he's telling, but to make things harder to figure out. That's why there is a marvelous, thrilling sense of espionage atmosphere here. We don't know what's happening because the story is being developed as we watch the film, as lies and trues are told on the screen. Very underrated.

There's something about Tony Scott's films that make them admirable to a degree, but ultimately they just don't work.

It's mostly entertaining, contains a good leading performance from Robert Redford, and has Tony Scott's signature style attached to it -- for better or for worse. It has a good approach to storytelling that I found very effective, and it's been edited down so that there's never a dull moment. It needed to remove or tone down some of its convoluted, confusing and unnecessary subplots, as well as make its characters seem less infallible than they are, but for the most part this is enjoyable.

The thing that I liked most about Spy Game is the focus on espionage instead of all out action scenes. Of course there was some good action; car chases, gun fights, and some hand-to-hand stuff. The casting is great in this movie. Redford is great but Pitt's performance isn't the best he seems pretty disinterested, which is true of most of his acting but in this movie it was more readily identifiable. As one of Tony Scott's final fims this movie does a good job of showing how great he was.

A great movie. The chemistry between Redford and Pitt was superb. The story for the most part was intriguing. There were a few parts, usually when they were trying to make a joke that the dialogue fell flat. Also it got just a little bit sappy at the very end but redeemed itself with a joke that was a fitting final scene. You'll definitely enjoy this if you're a fan of the genre and/or Redford/Pitt. BTW I couldn't stop thinking how much Robert Redford looks like Bryan Cranston in this film.

Scott directs another slick spy film, only this time the story is more layered and utilizes a slightly old fashioned flashback structure detailing the relationship between an old pro (Redford) and his young mentor (Pitt) in the cloak and dagger business. It's a surprisingly restrained work that's quite character focused and features less technical showboating, although Scott's fingerprints are all over it. It's a perfectly respectable film, but it's almost too 'square' for its own good.

Upon giving this film a rewatch I found it far more enjoyable the second time around. The soundtrack is absolutely superb and the film itself relies more on charm and spy tricks rather than gun battles and relentless action when compared to the James Bond films. Redford is superb and Brad Pitt is sound in his supporting role. Highly recommended if you're a fan of spy films or if you like Tony Scott.

This film relies far too heavily on the flashback device as a means to advance the plot. By the second half of the film the story has become so disjointed that it's difficult to stay fully invested in the outcome. There's some very convincing production design, particularly the sound and visuals of war-torn Beirut, but most of film takes place in offices, most of the cinematography capturing sideways glances and the shuffling of papers. Ultimately it's a disappointment, considering the cast.

A smart, well paced thriller that brings together two generational heartthrobs into a modern actioner, it also shows that these two actors have real chops, and Tony Scott knows exactly what the hell he's doing. It centers on two CIA agents, with Redford teaching Pitt the ropes, while at the same time the narrative shows Pitt using that training to get out of a situation that he should have never been in from the start.

This is a pretty solid Hollywood thriller that balances this plot with flashbacks that show how Redford recruited Pitt and how their relationship soured. Tony Scott is very restrained here, layering on a lot of style without deliberately fracturing the grammar of the film. The most interesting thing: I think you can literally see Pitt studying Redford in preparation for coopting his style a few years after this.

Run-of-the-mill spy thriller, less mass amounts of action scenes, instead replaced by a few nice little touches (ie tricks of the trade in the "Spy Game"). The love story was a bit sentimental but it didn't overly dwell on it.

Really expected a lot more from a thriller starring Pitt and Redford. The story's structure, which involves Redford's character sitting in a room and telling the story is a big part of why this film's suspense level never hits takeoff speed.
