Prior to their retirement nine years ago, Gregorio (Banderas) and Ingrid (Gugino) were the two greatest secret agents the world had ever known. Now, as the two are called back to duty, their adventures put them into such danger that the only two people who can rescue them (and maybe the world) are their children! Sometimes the biggest heroes are the smallest ones. (Miramax)

An embarrassment as an adaptation of the I Spy book series. The titular spy kids are almost always clearly seen and often are even in center frame. No child would have trouble picking them out from the other characters or background. Pathetic.

Rather than make a movie that he thinks kids would like, Rodriguez makes a movie that he feels a kid would have made. That's the charm of this movie series.

man, there are a ton of really low scores for this movie. jesus fuck people ... were you expecting a cannes-worthy film here?!?! i have seen this a number of times because of my son, and it's good enough that i can sit through it without thinking of hari kiri or something just as unpleasant. obviously not one of Rodriguez' movies to list in the canon of well-done films, but he manages to get enough goofy charm out of banderas to make this movie enjoyable enough for the adults.

Really adorable family flick, though I'd never been dissapointed by Robert Rodriguez so it wasn't surprising. Carmen and Juni, having just learned that their parents are missing, AND they're spies must forget about sibling rivalry and pull it together to save their parents, and- in a sense- the world. Good story. Original, at least. Nice performances all around. I especially enjoyed those of Tony Shalhoub, Alan Cumming and newcomer Daryl Sabara. Note: This is the only movie in the

This kinda clicked with me. Despite being squarely a commercial "family film" it never inspires contempt; Rodriguez's engaging story is a bit by-the-numbers emotionally but should connect equally well with kids who like to play secret agent and adults who have a taste for the surreal and silly. At its best it's like what would happen if Bob Clampett had ever taken a crack at a feature film.

I'm waiting for the ultra-violent "director's cut" in which the kids kill everyone with guitar-shaped shotguns and then ride off into the sunset.

Actually not bad. Too bad Disney made the same movie, changed spies to superheroes, and called it The Incredibles.

I like Robert Rodriguez. He is one of my favorite directors. I applaud his desire to make films for his children to see. And really, all in all, this is not a bad film, I just don't like it nearly as much as his other work. My children love it though, so on their recomendation I gave it an extra 20 points.

Endearingly inconsequential fluff can't quite reach the level of cleverness that would put it in the pantheon of the truly universal "family" entertainment, but it's fun enough as a loud and bouncy distraction for children, livened by a pair of charismatic performances from Sabara and PenaVega, and droll work from Cumming, Banderas and Gugino in support. Tempted to rate this as high as I would any Bond film, until I remembered THE INCREDIBLES which handled similar material with more pizazz.

Yeah, that's a pretty legit kids' movie. I enjoy the level of creativity and weirdness thrown into something that could be very cookie-cutter, and the pacing really kept up well. The siblings' arc from combative to supportive probably has a few pieces missing, and similarly for the villain's face turn, but overall, strong for what it is.

Rodriguez indulging his childhood fantasies. Creative gadgets and makeup, and the kids have enough personality to carry it. Nothing special, but it could have been a lot worse, and it is nowhere near Rodriguez's worst film. It also scores points for 'diversity' without crowing about it.

A pleasant little movie with enough thrills to keep the kids interested, and enough Rodriguez touches to keep me amused. Banderas and Gugino are beautiful, and Cumming is very good in the role that--in a perfect world--should have gone to Paul Reubens. It has a good theme too: the importance of family.

The start of one of the best (and by best I mean most tolerable) children's franchises of the 2000s - though each installment decreased slightly in quality, not one ever fell into the pitfalls of formula so deep as to warrant awful scores, and this was, children's movie or not, one of the best of its year. The films were witty, mature enough to interest adults, and the action was not only OK with parents but legitimately exciting. The cast is colorful and exciting.
