St. Benny the Dip

Not often you see journeyman director Edgar G. Ulmer getting to work with such a stellar cast. So much personality here in a throwaway, yet, very humorous comedy where three crooks hide-out pretending to be people of the cloth. Wish it was a more ambitious project, but it might still be one of Ulmer's best comedies! Not that comedies was something he did a lot of, but this one is funny, even with the more serious human moments in it.

Nice and authentic photography - there's one night scene done on a stage that's right out of Detour, but most of the daytime stuff has a nice dirty authenticity. Storywise, it's silly but it works. Along with Carnegie Hall, it's Ulmer's lightest film.

Astonishingly good, considering how low budget this is.
