On the sidewalks of the London theater district the buskers earn enough coins for a cheap room. Charles, who recites dramatic monologues, sees that a young pickpocket, Libby, also has a talent for dancing and adds her to his act. Harley, the theater patron who never knew Libby took his gold cigarette case, is impressed by Libby's dancing and invites her to bring Charles and the other buskers in his group to an after-the-play party. Libby comes alone. A theatrical career is launched. (imdb)

This film is an enjoyable early movie. It really invokes the time and place it depicts.I thought Vivien Leigh was good but Charles Laughton really made the picture. His acting is really the highlight of this picture.Rex Harrison really has a bit part to play as Liberty's lover and sponsor but he acts pretty well. The scene between between Liberty and Charles in her room was my favourite scene in the whole movie.Overall I enjoyed this film and would recommend it to anybody who is into early cinema .

Charles Laughton as a street performer in the busy streets of London! One day he comes across a petty/pretty pickpocket Vivien Leigh and their lives change. Laughton is excellent! He always manages to transform himself into all types of characters while still retaining that Laughton factor. He's an honest bum who almost turns into a raving lunatic when Leigh enters and exits his life. And it's delightfully sad. However there's something lacking in the production to take full advantage of it all.

Laughton is always enjoyable, and Vivien Leigh was pretty decent, not too annoying, but as a rising superstar dancer doesn't hack it. Fun movie.
