Stage Mother

This is cheesy and cliched but fun at times and certainly not to be taken too seriously. Maybelline's Southern drawl, made me cringe a bit (and giggle, I admit!) but other characters on screen clearly felt the same way and that's depicted in the film. It has a somewhat poignant side to it at times but im not sure if it's meant to be more comedy or drama based?. It didn't entirely fit well with me either way, ultimately, though I did enjoy the ending - the final scene is admittedly pretty cool.

Fairly good portrayal of the conservative Texan Dolly-Parton-Style mother who comes good in the city. It falls flat at times as the rendering of the drag-queen-life is waaay too tepid and PG.

I expected Stage Mother to be a feel-good film, full of singing, laughter, and overcoming prejudice; it is, but it's also surprisingly tedious. Weaver delivers a solid performance, but she can't save a badly-paced, lacklustre screenplay that doles out more clichés than anything else. The film is innocuously watchable, though its execution contradicts its own theme, that life is too short.
