I remember a high school teacher showing this in class and it was nice to see a real educator who cared for at least 90ish minutes.

Perhaps the ultimate inspiring teacher movie. Plus, it's the film that made math fun for Mexicans again!

It's above par for the type of film that it is (the inspirational classroom movie), and the performances are pretty good. But it hasn't aged well. The soundtrack is forgivably 80s, but the score is not, as the music is distracting more often than not. Garcia is at his best in roles like this; I just love to hate the guy, and Olmos telling him off is the most satisfying moment in the film. Worth the watch, if only to see how Adama reached deez keeeeeeeds.

My favorite school teacher makes a difference story, and the only good thing EJO has done (okay, maybe one of the best things).

Maybe I overrate this movie because I went to a high school with a ~40% drop out rate, yet a near 100% pass rate on the AP calculus test due to a great, tough-love teacher (though I doubt he gave a shit about us outside the classroom). Or maybe it's because it stars two of my favorite 3-name actors (if only PSH and DDL were in it, too!). Or maybe it's because Jaime Escalante is one of my favorite names ever.

Classic teacher in bad neighborhood but not too over done or over the top, the movie has a sense of humor but also carries the dramatic part. The acting is really good and the story is fun to watch, really inspiring.

Ah the inspirational teacher genre. This one is actually one of the better ones.

Without looking, this had to be the start of the "inspirational teacher" genre that was all the rage in the 1990s. This one doesn't have Coolio rapping to Pfeiffer (which was possibly just in the music video -- but who can say?), but it is naturalistic in its delivery. I like how the teacher is always delivering his stand-up material.

I believe that between my various Spanish and math classes throughout junior high, high school and college, I was forced to watch this almost a dozen times.

While the story is certainly inspiring, the acting and writing are just cheesy over-dramatic 80's fare that's failed to stand the test of time.

real story was whitewashed a bit and emotional pulls were overdone, but the remakrable accomplishments of Escalante did deserve recognition and provided some hope

Underrated biopic of Escalante. This should be required viewing for inner city teachers.

I remember a substitute teacher showing this in class and I recall him telling me in the most "an autistic kid won't get the lingo" to turn off Duke, the Genesis album I was playing on the classroom's PA system so we could watch this movie; Exodus Genesis, Kill the Duke. He yanked out the AUX cord from my iPod in jest

It's TO SIR WITH LOVE with a "modern" 80s edge; like any underdog formula, when done with a modicum of care and conviction, it's difficult to go too far wrong. Olmos anchors this and makes it something special, with his at times comically over-the-top theatrics creating an intriguing tension - is it a put-on to "shock" the students, or is he the genuine article? Unnecessarily labours the point of the third act conflict, and sometimes sputters outside the classroom, but satisfying overall.
