No hint of any "beyond" in this dull, witless sequel. Having worked hard in the first movie to establish a new TREK world, and in the second to pursue the characters further, here every virtue of the prior two movies is discarded. Characterisation is reduced to interactions of the most weakly humorous kind, the narrative is nothing but meaningless computerised action sequences, and the visual design consists of an inordinate number of scenes taking place in murky darkness. No redeeming features.

An expensive, spectacle-filled entry that promised BIG IMPORTANT EVENTS but ended up being entirely inconsequential, with characters and situations ending up right back where they started. This kind of plot reset is more acceptable in episodic television, but in a movie it feels lazy and overly safe. Forgettable.

Set phasers to "Ehn". The characters quickly say a few lines they're known for then you will all melt out of your seats to escape the embarrassment of the Sabotage sequence. This was just Wrath of Khan with no Khan or Wrath or depth or lasting impact on pulp culture at all. When you're an old wrinkled prune you'll look beyond Star Trek Beyond to the good sequel: Star Trek Whale of a Tale (2018)

Well I'll be, they finally sort of boldly went where no man had gone before. Until Beyond starts drawing from that same well AGAIN (and promptly falls in) with another villain with a grudge against the Federation, overpowered ship(s), crash in a futuristic city and Kirk in a small room forced to save the day. There's a few decent set-pieces, but everything's so simplified and unsurprising that it hurts my inner Trekkie. Now where did I leave my DS9 safety blanket?

I watched it and thought "that was okay, I guess". Then I thought a bit harder and felt, what was the point? What actually happened that affected the universe? There's a few funny quips and some good makeup. Literally nothing else mattered, what an absolute misfire.

When you see Captain Kirk on a dirt bike in a Start Trek movie poster, you gotta start asking questions, like "Who the fuck directed this, the guy who did the Fast & Furious series?" Yeah, right.

There are things about Beyond that work well: the true ensemble feel, the shared adventure beyond just Kirk and Spock, and a stand-up-and-cheer action finale (in spite of it being very silly). The problem, however, is the lackluster plot. The tired villains (a wasted Elba) with the same motives and the the ship destruction are now more than tiring.

Wow! After a great reboot and decent if flawed sequel, I did not see this coming. What a complete mess! Some of the cast show their charm from the previous films (Urban and the sadly missed Yelchin in particular) but most of the action scenes were meaningless, the plot was frequently and frustratingly convenient, (not to mention utterly predictable) and Elba was completely wasted playing such a dull generic villain. I'm surprised such mediocrity has irritated me so much but I expected better.

This feels like a bit of a step back. We learn almost nothing new about any character nor are there any new relationships, or even relationship building (apart from maybe Spock and Bones). What we have is simply some oddball explosions (a few of which are embarrassingly silly over the top trash) and a few chuckles.

While the first two installments may have more emotion, and even better villains, Star Trek Beyond still stands as one of the best. Justin Lin directed The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, so I was very surprised he made something so entertaining and true to it's characters. The story and action sequences are all done well yet again and it's eye-candy and characters make this very entertaining. I personally loved the last 30 minutes with the "Sabotage" and the ending. Totally worth watching.

I suppose I'm in the minority of quite liking Trek 2009 and Into Darkness, but this one seemed to miss a little too much for me. While undeniably it has charm and style, Lin's direction can be a little distracting and a tad too stylistic. The plot is a bit too simple to have any lasting effect, but the cast stays quite strong and there isn't a character that's uninteresting. The villain is a little dull, though. Alright, but not great by any means.

Let me just address the music- scene real quick: It's stupid. Not that that necessarily makes it bad, but it is undeniably stupid. It's the kind of stupid that works really well in the Fast and Furious franchise but maybe not so much in the Star Trek universe. There's some clever dialogue (thank you Pegg) but the whole thing is sort of forgettable. Not Godzilla-reboot-forgettable, but just about meh enough to be a disappointment.

Takes a much lighter tone akin to the show or Voyage Home, kind of a 50th anniversary throwback. The space madness villain is a dud, script is overly jokey, there's no moral dilemma, the macguffin is as lame as they come. If it were a TOS episode it'd be an average one at best and in that sense it hits the nostalgia chord more than its forebears, for better or worse.

Pine sucks, and Urban rocks, but this is garbage and will give trekkies a bad name. I mean, it will only exacerbate matters. By the way, let's forget about that stupid "the even ones are the good ones" rule. Sure, 'Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country' is amazing, but 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and "Star Trek" from 2009 would form the rest of my top 3 (of Star Trek movies...). So I guess my thesis would be that we just have to get through two more to get to a good one. Or wait until 2039!

Beyond stupidity - worst trek movie ever ...... Let me just start by saying that I loved the first Star Trek and thought the 2nd was pretty good. This though? This was horrible and I can't believe it is getting great reviews. There were times where my eyes got stuck in the back of my head because I rolled them so hard. It's even worse than the original ST5 The Final Frontier. This is garbage all around, crew just seemed uninspired by the horrible script and way too much lousy action sequences

My favourite out the three new Star Trek movies. The drone ships had a great look to them and the film kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Enjoyable character interactions, new alien Jayla was great and I liked the expanded role for Karl Urbans Mccoy. Hiding Idris Elba under makeup wasn't the best idea although he had some good moments near the end. At times image was too dark where it was difficult to clearly see what was happening. Overall a good watch.

The new character's got a great design & there's 1 exciting action sequence, but this film feels like just another tv episode - & an uninspired 1 at that. We've seen the Enterprise totaled too many times for it to impress & with a storyline this simple you need a great villain, but since all of his motivation is left unsaid till the last 20 minutes, he seems like just another mustache twirler. There's a forced attempt at a theme about unity vs going it alone, but it falls as flat as the jokes.

So awful that it's hard to find redeeming features–Beastie Boys music and Sofia Boutella are all that's good. Baddies have a swarm that can decimate their target, and yet they wait for a superweapon so we can have a wave-riding CGI scene. Main foe tells his plans to characters who escape and then get captured again. One third of the movie is actors sliding around expensive sets, and two-thirds is plot conveniences with Pine on a holographic Bike. Star Trek has never been this dumb before.

The movie was beyond boring. The first 10-20 minutes were promising, but what followed was a bunch of bland special effects action with some scenes feeling like they dragged on for too long. Character interactions were bland and trite, usually ending with predictable developments or mostly unfunny humor. I'm fine with them pushing away from the philosophy heavy shows of the past and into action-heavy sci-fi romps, but if this movie is to show anything, I predict the movies will be uninspired.

A nice continuation of the reboot series that combines the better parts of the previous two, while outdoing the outer space fun of Guardians of the Galaxy. The movie doesn't forget the franchise's philosophical roots, either: The good guys face having their peace, prosperity & optimism destroyed by a villain with a divisive, xenophobic, & myopically antagonistic agenda. It also has one of the best action sequences of the year & a Public Enemy track in a Star Trek movie. Highly recommended.

So now that Abrams got to make an actual Star Wars film instead, It befalls on the guy who made cars go wruum wruum in the Fast Furious Franchise to pick up the mantle. Still, the movies complete lack of rhythm, wit and discernible style can't completely ruin the core fun of, or the apparent love for the established universe. That is... until they put on Beastie Boys in a scene more deserving of the "Picard Face Palm" meme than most others.

Definitively average. It doesn't really have anything to set it apart from the first two except the wildly distracting Justin Lin direction that has the camera doing loop-de-loops in and out of scenes. The script is also a bit too lightweight for my tastes, and spends more time setting up action sequences than it does on anything cerebral. The main cast are still perfect for their roles, but this was definitely one of Star Trek's more forgettable cinematic outings.

Star Trek Beyond is a refreshingly small story within the rebooted universe. Of the three films to date this outing struck the best balance of what makes an entertaining blockbuster for all to enjoy, with a good measure of familiar and fan pleasing tropes that make a grounded Star Trek adventure. All of the characters each get their moment to shine, the new creative minds of director Justin Lin and co-writer Simon Pegg work together well and the Enterprise sequences in particular steal the show.

Arguably my favorite action blockbuster of summer 2016 if only for its basic simplicity. The Enterprise crew gets they ass stuck on a planet, they wander around trying to survive, regroup, beat the bad guys and get off that planet. It feels pretty much like what an episode of the original series might have actually felt like if they'd had two hours and $150 million or whatever to play with. That's not a bad thing at all. A worthwhile new entry for the new Trek film series.

The absence of J.J left some big questions for Justin Lin to fill, and sometimes he does. Lin doesn't carry the slick visuals and contrast of J.J's cinematography. Nor does he really build on these relationships and characters. The premise is also very thin and doesn't carry much of anything. Lin's best work here is how much dumb fun he has making this, and this undoubtedly entertaining, but it's missing a lot of the little things that made J.J's movies great. It's a step back.

While it's still a wildly fun space romp with dazzling special effects and excellent casting choices all around, the third entry in the new Star Trek movies shows a slight decline in entertainment value. *SPOILERS* I went to the theater because the power was out at home. Again the story is boring. The villain is just Khan again, right? Where is the cosmic angle promised by "Beyond" in the title? Can you get any dumber than defeating an enemy horde by making them listen to the Beastie Boys? Yet it still feels like the series' overall best, somehow. Visually impressive while maintaining some of Trek's charm. The humor adds a lot, although the character banter at this point illuminates nothing new.

About on par with the second one (which I feel I ranked a bit too high), if not a little better in terms of character and story being on the forefront without having to beg and borrow from one of the originals. I was worried that employing Justin Lin as director would mean the movie would become too much like action Sci-Fi which Star Trek (at its best) really isn't. Luckily, Lin shows a steady hand, it has a smart-if-unremarkable script, and leaves a few strands to move forward towards. See it!

I love how every time Captain Kirk goes on a mission thousands of his crew members die, yet after the fact he's always praised as a hero. Makes me lol. Btw, this style of Star Trek is more in line with the b-level episodes found in the original series, so those looking for a Star Trek movie that explores the best of what science fiction has to offer will surely be disappointed, probably insulted, at how stupid this is. But for those who like b-level space silliness, this will do the trick.

Pegg successfully captures the spirit of 'Star Trek' better than the previous movies thanks to grounded and believable characterization, surprisingly clever action set-pieces, and a fresh sense of adventure. Structured like a TV episode, with characters separated trying to cooperate, STB manages to look fresh with Lin's talent for action set-pieces and a slight sense of FAF camarederie. The Snowden-like villain hates the fed, so we get a whole sense of mass destruction all the time. Still, there is charisma here to make it the best in this reboot franchise. When Sabotage saves the day, Kirk rides a bike to serve as a distraction and nicely put in-jokes to satisfy non-Trekkers, what else do we need?

A good Star Trek movie isn't something we've seen in quite a long time, and getting one in the otherwise barren wasteland of Blockbuster Season 2016 is a relief. It's a movie that's heavy on action and special effects, but gives us enough character moments to keep itself balanced. It has a good setup, a strong enough premise, and a plot that, even with a weak villain, is effective. The action is more than passable, the acting is good, and while it might be a little too long, it's rarely dull.

Dull, lifeless Star Trek entry is saddled with bland villians and a tired, redundant screenplay which makes the bad guy's ultimate goal obscure and confusing (with Pegg's pushing of Scotty to front and centre not really helping matters). After the electric chemistry of its cast in the previous entries, all and sundry appear to be phoning it in this time, though there is a sweet farewell for Nimoy's Spock nicely integrated.

STAR TREK BEYOND is a valiant attempt to take the franchise back to its character-driven roots, placing the crew of the USS Enterprise in a predicament where their different talents and personalities actually seem to matter. Despite it's fairly predictable storyline, this third installment achieves what it sets out to do. Entertain. With a touch of sadness that hang over the entire film (re: Anton Yelchin & Leonard Nimoy), the film is quite fun and enjoyable for what it is. Sadly the Star Trek franchise seems to be getting more stale and generic, villain-of-the-week style as the series goes along (even Marvel movies are getting better at world-building and consequences). There's really nothing special here from action or plot perspective, techno-magic ends up as a cure-all to all the problems. The character development in this particularly is almost non-existent compared to the first two.

Makes me appreciate a lot of what INTO DARKNESS did more than I had. BEYOND is decent, though, with a great script, but the way things come together (or don't) is ultimately underwhelming and uninspired. The things I like about the other films (characters and relationships) are pretty much absent here; but, to be fair, the clunky, dumb plotting of the first two (of this universe, that is) was fortunately thrown overboard in favor of a story that moves well *and* makes sense.

Very light entertainment, but given WB/DC's wretched output I've realised that if you can pull off a movie that lightly entertains me for about two hours, then that's quite a win! "Adventures in Space" rather than real science fiction, the script has no teeth - the crew aren't hurting people around them or making tough decisions, so Marvel and DC have already trounced this franchise model by showing us actual consequences for all those exciting cgi destruction-porn sequences in their films.

Better than ST:ID, but still only okay. It would have been better as a 1-hour tv episode. The first fifteen minutes are awful - using on the nose dialogue to describe how every character is feeling. It gets better once they get to the main planet and the characters split into groups (Spock and Bones together are perfect), but it's still fairly low stakes all the way. The destruction of the ship barely matters, whenever there's a problem, the transporter fixes it, and the end is a fist-fight.

Star Trek Beyond is awesome. Lots of fun lines, lots of technobabble, and lots of action. Like Into Darkness, the film has a strong open that sets the tone for the rest of the film, expect this time it doesn't retread old ground, but delivers a fast-paced contained adventure that acknowledges all that came before, while moving forward. My biggest gripe is the "twist" or plot-reveal, which was over-overshadowed throughout, and while unnecessary it is forgivable. Urban's Bones wins MVP.

Different combinations of crew members drive home the message that they respect, admire, love, and count on each other, and that this is why Enterprise has endured for these many decades. Add the real-life death of actors Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin, whose Checkov will not be recast in future films, and a lovely voiceover on the "Space: the final frontier" intro, and it's nearly impossible not to feel a warm nostalgia or an almost urgent desire to see more films with this cast.

This grazes along the original reboot in terms of quality so consistently, perhaps at times even raising its head above the mark. The stakes are sudden and clear -- the crew of the Enterprise are in real peril -- and the characters are given the time needed to keep us interested in who they are. Sadly, Elba is given the worst character. He does what he can, and the writing and characters around him manage to elevate his plight. This was just a great time at the movies.

A stellar turnaround from the shitfest that was Into Darkness. This is about as good as we can expect from Trek these days. Once they get off the planet, it kinda falls apart, and it has two too many endings, but goddamn if this isn't the most I've enjoyed Star Trek since the fourth season of Enterprise. Finally this iteration of Trek isn't completely reliant on past references, and even has a nice farewell to Nimoy, which I'm taking as a subtle nod that they're done doing that for good.

Good use of music (har har). But as one who chides my friends for their inability to suspend their disbelief, I couldn't get myself into this one. The weakest of the 3 new star trek movies. It did look good though

Star Trek Beyond Interest. It doesn't even have the TV show charm of Insurrection and Nemesis.

A triumphant return to the time-honored tradition of shitty Star Trek motion pictures. Call me spoiled by the sophistication of the crews in TNG, DS9, and the other bastard brothers of the undead/undying series, but each and every one of James Tiberius Kirk's loyal "krew" feels too dimwitted to effectively (hell, even correctly) operate a coffee maker, let alone a star ship with approximately a gajillion moving parts.

ugh. Each entry in the rebooted franchise has moved further and further away from Roddenberry's progressive sci-fi vision and closer and closer towards Hollywood's generic sci-fi action film: Generic evil villain, Generic sexy sidekick, generic action sequences, generic MacGuffin. The movies are still watchable but at this rate, they probably won't be for very much longer.

As a Trek fan from my childhood I am very dissapointed with this. This is an ordinary "space action" movie that does not feel like a "Star Trek" movie at all. Also why is this called "Beyond", "Beyond" what have we been?! You'd expect some interesting travel story beyond federation borders, and it ends up nowhere near like it... JJ Abrams did awesome job with the first installement of this "new" Trek, second movie was decent but it was a rip off from former Trek movie, and this one is just weak.

An underwhelming experience with a boring antagonist, a plot that doesn't go into hyper-drive in the vast majority of the film and same old cliches of "saving the world in the last minute". It was easy to predict almost every step the plot went to and I'll most likely won't remember any of it a week from now.

The Star Trek reboot needs to stop trying to be Star Wars and go back to its roots...

This movie is much more "fun" than the last one. That being said, the plot felt tired and the villain was relatively bland. A step up from the second movie but hopefully they decide to stop here.

Jaylah is an alien who drinks scotch, is extraordinarily adept at martial arts, and also listens to Public Enemy and the Beastie Boys. I loved her. Also Elba isn't getting enough credit but he's awesome and is basically playing a 21st century sci-fi version of Calibos. Since there was a death in the 2nd one and the destruction of the Enterprise in the 3rd one, the 4th one needs to involve whales and/or time travel or I want my money back.

Exactly what you'd expect from combining Fast and Furious with Star Trek: nonsense. It seems like they forgot this is a Star Trek movie.

It was painful to see the Enterprise going down like that. My opinion here : http://opinion-as-a-moviefreak.blogspot.be/2016/12/star-trek-beyond-2016.html

Garbage until the last reel which pulls it back. I mean it's a fine film, but it isn't Star Trek until then. But stop blowing up the fucking ship, she's a main character not a car.

Some of the CGI looked outdated, but knowing the level of FX the franchise came from, it gets a pass. The film tied itself together in a believable fashion, with reasonable, albeit fast-paced/superficial depth (the Krall sub-plot). I understand there are a tonne of references I have missed, not being well versed in the series, but I can see how the fan-service would be appreciated. Sadly, some of those nods were in the form of on-screen eulogies, for both new & old actors.
