Sequels and films based on tv shows normally aren't my thing. But the film's producers had a great understanding of Star Trek--which heightens the production. They took the franchise's forward thinking concerns about humanity and infused them with horror. The story works on a macro level; via a terrifying villain and a cautionary tale regarding genetic tampering. Yet it's also personal, as Kirk's repeated anxiety on aging & death is achingly poetic. One of the most underrated sci-fi movies ever.

Has a real sense of red-blooded adventure that was lacking in the first film, not to mention a killer villain. The duel of overacting between Shatner and Montalban is delicious.

Basically put the Star Trek movie of Star Trek movies. Khan is certainly one of the best movie villains ever, and could very well be the best sci-fi movie villain ever (though Hal 9000 from 2001 does give very strong competition). The famous, or infamous in some circles, KHAANNN!! scream from Kirk honestly sends shivers down my spine every time I see it. The film itself is quite good and offers a great social commentary on science intended for good being misused for evil.

A remarkable achievement in genre cinema: in equal parts classical myth and sincere futurism, thus battling at the same time the inevitability of death against the capability of humanity to adapt to it, which is the great Trek parable. The film's most beautiful forgotten line comes near the beginning, when Kirk asks Spock how the young, green Enterprise crew may respond under pressure: Spock: "As with all living things, each according to his gifts." More human words were never said.

Often accused of being the least cerebral Trek but for my money it's just as thoughtful as the rest. Khan is actually a lot like V'Ger, both obsessive romantics who use proxy avatars to court those who cast them out. The return to character-driven drama was the best thing for the franchise and they nail the key emotional checkpoints here: Khan's intro, Spock's outro, and Kirk's catharsis are all still effective.

If Star Trek had always got this kind of treatment, it wouldn't need a hip, modern reboot. Only a handful of episodes (Inner Light, The Visitor) have this kind of impact.

Everything a Star Trek movie should’ve been, the characters are all in top form and Kirstie Alley is a kinda hot Vulcan before she became a giant racist whale. Chekov wasn’t in season one of Star Trek so Khan totally does that thing where he pretends to know someone to not make it awkward. To the last, I will grapple with thee... from Hell's heart, I stab at thee! For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee! William Shatner’s assistant struggling with his corset.

MontalBAAAAAN!! Good flick, but I do wish they did more with Khan and his vaunted intellect. Like probably everyone who saw this as a kid, the ear-parasite business made a scar. Even though it didn't follow through on the "madness and death" promise.

For Trekkies like me this is the Holy Grail of Trek. Great action, super (if slightly see-through) plot and one of the finest villian's in movie history. But beyond this, WoK is also one of the greatest action sci-fi movies ever made, and is one of maybe only two or three of the eleven Trek films that truly appeals and is enjoyed by those who have no interest in Star Trek. I never get tired if watching it.

Rumor has it that when Jack B. Sowards was writing this he pitched the idea of having Spock die to producer Robert Sallin and director Nicholas Meyer. Supposedly Meyer was against the idea saying very simply, "You can't. You can't kill off one of the franchise's mainstays. You just can't." Robert looked from Meyer to Sowards, nodded, then told Meyer, "Oh yes he Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!"

Far better than the first film installment. Khan is a true menace and this movie does a good job at proving that. Somewhat slow and I can see why some people don't like Star Trek, but hell. I enjoy it. This is one of the best movies out there. For sure enough to please trekkies.

Feels like a solid extended episode of the orginal series. It has a fine MacGuffin, the plot and ideas are executed well, and the whole thing is quite a lot of fun. Montalban's performance is most enjoyable, and the dynamics between him and Kirk, and among Kirk/Spock/Bones work well. Also, those earwig things remain horrifying after all this time. It is by no means perfect, but definitely worth a watch if you are in the mood.

Easily the best of the Star Trek films, this stands on its own as arguably one of the best sci-fi films of the 80s, thanks to Nicolas Ray's first rate direction. Ricardo Montalban shines as the best & most well developed villian in the Star Trek series. Alot of "highs" to this film- the core ensemble cast gave their best individual performances, the musical score was first rate, the special effects excellent. But this film will probably be best known as Kirstie Alley's film debut. A must see.

Kudos to the score, which gives a profound sense of urgency to space battles that don't allow for any Star Wars-style zipping around. It's also difficult 2 imagine a more mind-blowing climax in 1982 than Spock's death; in a time before studios became slaves to franchises the idea he might actually stay dead must have seemed shockingly possible. Still, none of this matters w/out Montalban's Khan who proves there's nothing more inherently compelling than a Moby-Dick-sized grudge match.

I never really liked this a kid, always preferring to watch IV or VI, but rewatching it for the first time in atleast 15 years my opinion of it has dramatically improved. This is actually a good sci-fi action film! There's a cool villain with charismatic monologs! There's character development! There's set-up and payoff! There's dramatic stakes that feel earned! There's space battles and explosions! I still don't think it's the best Star Trek film, but yeah, Wrath of Khan is good.

You have to wonder if it didn't have 'Start Trek' in the title this movie would get the recognition it deserves. The Wrath of Khan is as near as perfect for an adventure film; it's character driven with story and writing that is pitch perfect, borrowing liberally - but intelligently - from the likes of Dickens, Shakespeare and Melville and James Horner's score is a tour de force. Unquestionably one of the finest movies of its genre.

Outdoes the original in almost every way, upping the action and the excitement, fixing the pacing, and capturing a sense of wonder that the original only tried to touch on. It even improved on the score, which was one of the only great parts of the first. The imagery, the interplay between the characters, the classical allusions, the mix of creation and destruction all blend into an amazing sci-fi film.

So good the folks behind the TNG movies have tried to remake this twice, missing the point each time. Wrath Of Khan is really about Kirk getting old, he's no longer the dashing young captain, flying around the galaxy getting in adventures. He's aging, stuck behind a desk, and when he takes the Enterprise out for a quick spin he finds himself facing the consequences of his youth. Shatner is great in this, the action always drives the plot forward and it has a very satisfying end.

As a life long trekkie I loved it but I concede much of its charm depends on that loyalty. Reasonable script and plot with strong performances from Ricardo Montalban, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. One of the most memorable death scenes in science fiction and a great example of what Star Trek could do if it doesn't try to compete too hard.

Top badass moment? Can I say the whole film? I guess not, so I'm going to select Kirk's reprogramming the Kobayashi Maru test so he could beat it. Is that not the ultimate in thinking outside the box? You could set up an entire and very lucrative, senior management training programme around that one. It's just a shame it's not possible to do it to real-life. I'd have an Aston Martin by now if it was. It's still totally badass though. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

I was considering a score of ten, because of the decision to kill off Spock. Even if it was Nimoy's decision to leave, it is a disgrace that the filmmakers didn't do whatever would have been necessary to convince him to stay. Solid pace, a little bit of pompous 80s haircuts and aryan 80s machos, space travel, humour, some unexpected gore and a thrilling story - what's not to like? Although I feel people who haven't seen the show prior to watching the films (like me) will be missing an important element of appreciation. There are a few interactions that seem to invoke a feeling of subtlety and prior character history, which went straight over my head. Hence why the lack of a better score. Still great though.

As I expected it's a vast improvement over the first movie, and a pretty damn good film on its own too, as it managed to take an otherwise forgettable villain from the TV series and turn him into one of the most memorable characters of the Star Trek franchise. It's one of those movies where you've seen all the good moments in isolation, so a final judgment depends on how the connective tissue works. And it's... *pretty* good? It's a hell of a lot more functional and meaningful than Khan's appearance in the reboot, but it's still a bit lightweight and oddly-paced in its second half, relying possibly overmuch on the action and not enough on character moments. Good, but not great.

More competent than the first film, despite a budget that was a quarter that of the initial instalment, but less thematically ambitious, too. So, I like this film, but I don't love it. I'm about to commit Trekkie sacrilege here, but Into Darkness is better than this film in every conceivable way. Montalban is great as Khan - it's a shame he gets even less to do than Cumberbatch in the latest film. Is this the iconic villain Trekkies have been lauding for decades? This is the pinnacle of what classic Star Trek has to offer? I like it, but it feels like a bite out of what should be a much more fulfilling meal.

Three years hence the first outing but little has advanced in movie production terms. Again the plot and narrative is overly simplistic and seems all but cribbed from a college-grade reading list. From a modern vantage point the elided backstory feels like cost-cutting and undermines the drama. The titular Khan is all pantomime, no pants. Compared to its prequel, there is little spectacle and no sense of wonder. Shatner memes aside, WoK is undeserving of the esteem Trekkies often award it.
