Possibly even faster paced than the first entry, this is a very enjoyable and engaging sci-fi actioner. The strong ensemble cast appears more settled and well-rounded than the first instalment, and the dialogue, story and performances feel stronger; Cumberbatch's slightly OTT performance is a highlight, and it's good to see Peter Weller again. The overall look of the film and the effects are first class. The nods to previous films are very well handled. Recommended.

Diet Spielberg with a somewhat bitter aftertaste of flat character interactions, plain stupid blunders of logic and attempts at dramatic weight that might as well have been aborted. But, once it finally gets going, it's effective blockbuster entertainment.

Star Trek into Darkness is a case of "okayness," which is precisely its problem. The famous franchise tagline may be bold but the film, though slickly made and mildly entertaining, feels a little too middle-of-the-road, never really inspiring much love or excitement.

J.J. Abrams is at the top of his game. He's done Super 8, Star Trek, and the even the upcoming star wars series. Star Trek Into Darkness is truly an amazing film to satisfy newbies and trekkies alike. Cumberbatch is a great villain. This is almost as great as 2009's Star Trek. While Abrams shouldn't try to make these so close to the originals, it's still a really emotional and really fun ride. If you like Star Trek, you'll probably love this. Very much so recommended.

My inner 12 year old was utterly satisfied with this. My thirty year old self had the feeling a movie had just yelled in it's face for two hours. All around goodness on the action front and Cumberbatch is an excellent villain. But I do get the feeling that maybe the same director and screenwriter shouldn't do all films in a franchise as it leeds to "Screw this character-stuff, we did that in the fist one. LET'S GO!!"

It may take the experience of mortality as a key theme, but this is certainly rollicking adventure rather than any real journey into darkness, conceptual or otherwise. Nevertheless, the filmmakers deserve credit for the effort expended on most of the major aspects of storytelling, especially when compared with most recent blockbuster fare. Perhaps the climax lacked grandeur, although Kirk's concluding soliloquy notably contained an obvious Obama reference, in the form of "that's not who we are".

The universe and the cast now firmly established, J J Abrams is able to power through, and delivers a bona-fide epic blockbuster, comprised of great set pieces, tense action, funny quips, LENSE FLARES, menacing bad guys. tech mumbo-jumbo and an actual well-conceived sci-fi theme, mirroring current real world challenges.

A couple of magnificent showoffs from Cumberbatch and a decent pace can't make up for the most irritating "tell it, don't show it - and then re-tell what you just did"-script coupled with borderline dull action sequences. Abrams, please shape up before taking on Star Wars!

Just as good as its predecessor, if not slightly better. Almost everything works, and though it is big, loud, and occasionally a bit dumb it was a home run for me. Cumberbatch is brilliant - a throughly gripping screen presence. A bit over the top, perhaps, but fitting with the film as a whole. Abrams' Star Trek is by a mile the most engaging and entertaining current big-budget franchise. I thought the Wrath of Khan nods were perfect.

By adding Benedict's Khan to the mix, STID invites comparisons to the previous film, and the results aren't in its favor. I, honestly and without purposefully being an elitist, hipster douchebag, felt more psychological menace from Ricardo. Is there a pill I can take for that?

I'm still waiting for them to remake the 4th Star Trek. Wrath of Khan had weight behind it, Spock was dead and baby we had no idea where we'd go from here and would have to wait for the next movie. Kirk is dead for like ten minutes in this lol Hooted when after the credits, a screen mentioning 9/11 veterans came up, after a movie that has Khan crash his starship into all the buildings.

Abrams embraces the hokey, problematic tropes of old sci-fi (that Trek, let's be honest, perpetuated as often as subverted) and modern action cliches, and tones down the memorable stylistic idiosyncrasies of the last film. Kirk and Spock are well-cast but their arcs culminate in a moment of obnoxious fanservice that then doesn't even get committed to narratively. The villain is better than last time but still just okay.

The first film of this reboot was fun because it didn't try to be anything other than a big, dumb summer action flick. This sequel makes the mistake of bogging down the proceedings with an exposition-heavy script featuring an unnecessarily cluttered story. You know this flick has lost its way when the big emotional climax consists of Kirk literally kicking the warp drive until it starts working again. At least Simon Pegg's constantly exasperated Scotty is still entertaining.

This is about 80% a good to great movie. All the cast fit their roles like a glove, decent plot, enough bang from the effects and action. But then, That Scene. With That Skyward Scream. Oh very dear. In summary, if you've only seen the reboot movie, go and see it, good times to you. If you are a Trek fan, maybe you can look past the last 20 minutes, I understand if you don't. Hopefully they move more towards their own plots in future. Or if they must recycle the past, don't botch the end so bad

I honestly haven't enjoyed myself in a cinema this much for an age! True, I do love much anything old Star Trek, & as much as I never thought I would, I have totally bought into Abrams alternate universe. "Into Darkness" is cheesy, camp, bright & glitzy, but also has an engaging storyline, great performances & involving characters. By toying with Trek's greatest moment in Khan, Abrams was playing with fire, but he treats it with respect & a knowing candor. Made to entertain & an absolute blast!

Into Darkness is a duplicitous title for a retread, albeit one saved by Abram's impeccable visual sense. Nevertheless, the overbearing phantasmagoria of the film overcompensates for its essential scrawniness; scrawniness evinced in the film's clumsy dialogue, ADHD attention span, incredible plot transparency, and so on. The film simply feels too episodic, unsubstantial: even as a mild fan, WoK will always have its unique signature. This film will be remembered as the one between Abrams 1 and 3.

It's a modicum less obnoxious and more tolerable than its predecessor, but it's still a safe-bet action blockbuster. A relentless state of dire circumstances and close calls, but the risks and consequences are never actually real. How many times can Kirk's death wish gut feelings trump the scientific reasoning of his officers? During the film's climax he literally fixes a radioactive warp core thingy - a massive and apparently complex piece of machinery - by giving it a few good kicks.

Good spectacle that doesn't stand up to scrutiny. Its hard to notice its shortcomings when it pretty much never stops to take a breath, but unfortunately most of its emotional impact is undermined by cribbing scenes from previous Trek hits and the film's assumption of deep bonds that it tells us about, but does not do the work to develop.

I think it's really depressing how the director seemed more interested in showing lots of explosions, violence and pretty girls than creating an exciting adventure. J. J. Abrams is miles ahead of everyone when it comes to blockbuster entertainment. Events lead into each other effortless in a blistering pace, carefully balancing humor and drama. Once again it manages to update a stale franchise, whilst respectfully toying with key concepts of the original lore. The dialogue isn't as sharp, and the ride not quite as smooth as Abrams first 'Star Trek', but what a bad guy! A decent third movie and this will rival the Indiana Jones franchise, entertainmentwise.

In this version 2.0, Kirk is hornier and snarkier than ever, Bones is more bitter, Uhura has pretty much been reduced to a whiny bit of set dressing and Spock somehow makes dry toast seem exciting by comparison. On the plus side, Simon Pegg is still there to save this cast of imbeciles from a fate worse than...well, it could have been. And I still say the Enterprise bridge looks like a Target pont-of-sael kiosk. Truly, Star Trek, The iGeneration.

Appreciable for its focus on character dynamics and sticking to heavier themes. Tries to be a remix of VI and II but the more blatant WoK recreations come across as tacky and unearned and the political allegory is odd at times (How many sacred missiles are there? Seventy-two!). McCoy was always my favorite and he gets the short shrift so that's a bummer.

This is so similar to the first one, especially stylistically, that there doesn't seem to be much reason for this film's existence (apart from the obvious monetary reason). Although the action scenes are better, and better filmed (mainly thanks to Inception), the film itself isn't, as it's so fast-paced and so boringly cliched in the first half (but things pick up in the second half). Also, I couldn't give a crap less about Kirk, who is played by Chris Pine with such a negative amount of charisma

Good effects and action scenes but it's all style with little substance. I did like Benedict Cumberbatch who had presence onscreen but his eventually character reveal was poor. It felt like part Star Wars and part remake of the Wrath of Khan. Also plot issues everywhere. Why use starships when you can beam between planets. Abrams consistently brings 3 things 2 the table in films he directs: an insistence that his action set pieces r grounded in character, story, & emotional stakes so that it's more than a roller coaster. This puts him ahead of 95% of his peers. But he rushes through 2 much this go round, shoehorning in 1 too many inversions of 82's Wrath of Khan. Since this new version of Kirk & Spock have yet 2 establish any real sense of history together, the emotional payoff Abrams is looking 4 never arrives.

I found everything involving (SPOILERS) Khan to be pretty silly and unnecessary. This isn't a comic book movie, we don't need classic villains. Making up new villains is fine, indeed, preferred. Other than that, though, this is a mostly fast-paced space adventure that holds your attention. The plot manages to be both convoluted and dumb at the same time. The ship-to-ship skydiving (spacediving?) was a really cool sequence.

Wants to take itself kinda seriously while simultaneously dumbs the characters down to over the top caricatures. This makes the the whole "darkness" feel cheap & confused, like a misguided effort to fit in with the more gloomy action blockbusters popular at the time. That this also constitutes a negligent misuse of Star Trek ideals is further grounds for a slightly harsh judgment. Anyway I was mostly bored or frustrated through this which was only amplified by some competent technical execution.

Into Darkness is Abrams's second entry to the franchise, and for the most part, it succeeds. Pine/Quinto are great again, and their relationship has some interesting development. The effects are once again great, and the overall direction is exactly what you expect from Abrams. However, the biggest highlight is Cumberbatch as Khan. He absolutely sells this for the iconic character. Aside from a few screenwriting issues that are very noticeable, this was another great entry for Abrams.

I am a huge Star Trek fan, so it's hard not to love this. However, there were a few plot points that deviated a bit too far from the original storyline, such as the handling of commander Pike. When "Star Trek" was first rebooted, I had mixed feelings, all these new faces playing the characters that I grew up recognizing, surely they'd disappoint me, but it didn't, it was awesome. The same thing happened when I found out that "Into Darkness" took a reboot to the beloved "Wrath of Khan" and now Khan would be played by some funny looking British guy rather than a feathery haired latin hunkcicle, and once again, Abrams knocked it out of the ball park.

Abrams and the writers went for a thematic successor to The Wrath of Khan, a decidedly ballsy aim if ever one existed. They made almost the best film of it that I can imagine. It has its flaws: the repetitive ticking-clock motif, the emotionally disingenuous, anticlimactic ending, the constant mirror-images of Wrath of Khan scenes. With that said, they truly succeeded in capturing the spirit of Trek and Roddenberry's vision. Still, as Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Quotation confesses inferiority."

I know Into Darkness has garnered a lot of criticism by long time fans, particularly in villain Khan (in which I know nothing about). As a standalone character, I found him to be one of the best characters in the film. The film itself is much more action heavy and did not have the same level of character interaction and banter that made the first one so memorable. That's why when Khan takes center stage and speaks with such weight, it is hard for me to think less of him. Cumberbatch is wonderful

I didn't expect to laugh as much as I did for a movie that I took as seriously as I did! It was an interesting blend of comedy and Sci-Fi action-adventure. The new take on the material is still fresh and still holds together surprisingly well. But while it has a much better antagonist this time around, I don't feel that this episode quite matched up to the first. Maybe it harkened back to "Wrath of Khan" a little too much. Maybe it was too much fan service altogether. But I'm a fan so it works!

It met my expectations and was definitely entertaining throughout. I do wish they had spent a little more time at the ending so we could see the consequences of the corruption within Starfleet. But as big blockbuster summer movies go, this film at least has solid emotion in it and a nice cast of actors to solidify any sense of pathos conveyed in the film, making its quality comparable to the previous film. A solid Star Trek entry that is exceptionally well-crafted but falters in its unwillingness to take plot risks. Without revealing too much, there is a moment near the end where the writers had the opportunity to take a chance to have a nice nod to a previous Trek, only to cop out. This plot choice undermines an emotional moment mere minutes earlier. That downfall aside, it's an intense, highly enjoyable Star Trek and that will be enough for most people.

Abrams is a very good action director and the movie keeps up a breakneck pace throughout most of its run time. Sometimes it feels like things are moving too quickly, but it isn't until after the film ends that you realize it absolutely needed to move that fast. If the film had slowed down even for a moment, we might have had a chance to realize that the script is incredibly, bafflingly stupid. The strong performances and brisk pacing cover most of the holes and keep things fun and entertaining.

Glad JJ got to make two Star Wars movies in preparation for rebooting the Star Wars franchise.

An improvement over the original in almost every regard. Cumberbatch steals the screen whenever he is on. While the film could have used some editing, it never drags.

Abrams has such an eye for creating tone with his camera movement - it's really quite amazing. But this movie is mostly a mess. Without the character development of the first film, this film grows very forgettable due to its pointlessly convoluted narrative structure. It loses its focus on why we might want to care about these people and events.

Star Trek Into Darkness is essentially a really really good magic trick. The one hand is glamorous CGI, impeccable action, and a slick and polished Hollywood visual style. But the other hand tries to hide a weak plot with underdeveloped characters by having things happen so fast that only a trained eye can keep up. I see your sleight of hand Abrams. It's clever but not clever enough.

it's a great action movie, but whether or not that makes it a great star trek movie is debatable. there are a lot of dumb things in it, there's a lot of things being reused from previous movies...but it's still a huge, fun explosive film.

Great fun. Sometimes it comes off like a particularly smart episode of the TV series, stretched across the big screen with the budget and sweeping visuals to match. It's equal parts cerebral and exciting, a tasty summer popcorn flick. Near the end, it really kicks into high gear and starts gleefully messing around with the canon and upending fan expectations and manages to work up some exhilarating mojo for the climax. Hard to imagine anybody being less than pleased with it, overall.

You want so much to like it better. But you can't. The lame-ish plot just doesn't let you. With this level of execution if I had more "explore new worlds" and "space, the final frontier" instead of "hit him hard" and "smash his head in" I'd be in heaven. Alas, I'm still here. Still disappointed. Still hopeful.

The additions of B.Cumberbatch and Alice.E give this sequel more charisma and curves, but the overall story isn't as elegant or well-told as in the '09-film; still lots of fun to be found from this part of the journey as well, and I'm looking forward to the next one. *Preview*: #13#, exp-4*, hype!, pt1, writers/1, director Abrams/2, cast, R3.

True to the originals, but with too much time wasted on action. It would have been better to spend more on the characters.

It took me a whole year to remember that I saw this movie and rank it, if that gives you any idea of what I thought.

Benedict Cumberbatch knocks it out of the park again. His villain is awesome, calm and collected but also ferocious. I like the movie and love his performance.

This film was actually much better than the first film in the reboot. It gives you what you want which is good fun with loads of action. Not very science fictiony, instead it's more of a modern day submarine movie with a great villian.

Beautifully made, terribly written gibberish.

Tedious; plagued with the same implausibilities as the first one (now with even less credibility!) If you can ignore the lens flares (good luck with that) then the visual style isn't bad.
