Despite some odd choices (new aliens, lens flares everywhere), Star Trek is a bold kick in the spacepants that will revive the franchise for sure. Slick, sexy, spectacular. Not super deep, but enough winks to the other series for hardcore fans and great entertainment value for new viewers. Keeps a nice pace so the audience won't find time to get bored, and the cast really nails their roles (with only Chekov as a weakish link). I'll be there for the 2nd movie for sure!

The "Star Trek" movie that alienates trekkies for the sake of mass appeal, and it definitely is appealing. This movie has a ton of action, and a generally exciting, and, at many times, a funny plot. While the average person may find this movie very entertaining, the "Star Trek" fan will find the deviation from reality in past movies unsettling. Regardless of the artistic license taken in this movie, I definitely look forward to see where they take the franchise next.

I had plenty of reservations going into this film, but Abrams seems to have navigated the core genres equally: comedy, action and adventure, to spin a fun tale that never lets up. This series (I'm going to safely assume a sequel or two) will never ever be the original series, but then again, it doesn't try to be, either. This is the same universe for a new generation. And while acknowledging the past with a wink and a nudge, this iteration rightly sets its sights on the future.

This was a hard franchise to reboot, as it had to satisfy purists as well as make it work for new audiences. But what Abrams did here was great: getting rid of the silly parts of Trek (technobabble) while infusing it with cooler things (younger actors). An honest complaint is that the script's Campbellian story structure gives it more of a Star Wars tone. But that's a minor distraction as the picture still includes the Trek heart of turning workplace diversity into friendship. Good fun!

The flagship space opera covered as an arena rock ballad. It's full of cliche and callbacks (even the Saturday morning cartoon gets a nod) and pulls the easiest heartstrings (parents get killed) but damn if it isn't entertaining to watch James T. Kirk being born again into a tentpole action blockbuster. I dig that his personality contrasts in a timeline where he never knows his father. Abrams' urgent pacing is apropo to the premise of having been too late to save the day.

Just when you thought this franchise was down and out it knocks one right out of the park. It might not be the smartest, but damn if it isn't the most fun Star Trek in years. Great cast, good story, superb directing, and a galaxy of fun. If this is the future of Star Trek, then consider me a trekkie.

There are a few things which make this movie that good: first of all the fact that one doesn't need any knowledge of previous star trek films, which makes it enjoyable for everyone. Second of all, it just looks awesome, everything from the make up and costumes to the CGI effects is quite perfect. Next to that the acting performances are great. Last but not least the story itself is quite amazing at times, but it's a good thing they didn't take it too serious(funny at times). Just a great film!

Without understanding all the references and all the trekkie humour nothing but a mediocre movie is left. The acting is nothing but average even though the cast fits pretty good concerning their looks. The art department gave the enterprise quite a flashy style update while the special effects aren't overly impressive compared to what could be seen in very recent film history. 07/05/09

I liked it better the second time around, perhaps because I've since caught up with the previous films. It's the best of the bunch. Nice-looking, with a sense of humour and a terrific cast, the only complaint is that it suffers from origin story establishing syndrome, though it balances introduction and fan-pleasing very well. Thanks in part to great pacing, it's over all too quickly and forgettable baddie Bana seems to hardly be in it at all. Nevertheless, a franchise is reborn and I want more.

The changes made 2 pull in skateboarders & Gossip girls r a little disheartening: the film strip-malls its iconic characters in2 something much less distinct: Kirk has gone from being a responsible officer w/ somewhat of a maverick streak 2 becoming Top Gun'sMaverick; & while Spock still mostly keeps his Vulcan cool, he's also prone to flying in2 Wolverine-like rages if you insult his mother. AND YET, action flicks this fun & well crafted are rare & u'd have 2 force urself not 2 enjoy this one.

This jumpstarted my Star Trek fandom since I could never get into the universe before and thought it was too campy/boring compared to Star Wars. JJ Abrams really did a great job with a self-contained story. Why shouldn't space military---yes, I know---be more actiony? I remember being annoyed at how quickly Kirk ascended. The sequels didn't capture as much of my attention. Fav scene: the beginning chase toward the ravine and the western setting was like Firefly.

Eschews any aspirations of high-minded social commentary in favor of delivering a rollicking good time, and succeeds admirably. Highly energetic and entertaining film that honors the franchise's past while firmly establishing its own identity. Bravo, JJ.

"Star Trek" is one definite crowd-pleaser. It's smothered with action, humor, strong actors, and been gifted with a fun, if sometimes complicated, storyline. Somehow the filmmakers have managed to take what the franchise used to be, keep all the familiar elements and make them refreshing and ultimately pretty darn cool. This Enterprise trip works best when the actors really carry their weight, and they're usually spot-on in making "Trek" accessible, funny, crisp, and thrilling.

Better than the later Star Trek movies for sure. I really enjoyed the new direction all the sets and design took. It looked futuristic but still not as advanced as in The Next Generation. However there are a few gripes, there are a few action sequences that are utterly pointless and could've been removed, lens flare is the name of the game and some of the personal drama was just so over-the-top it was ridiculous. With all that said it's still damn fun, Jim.

Gotta love the gleeful destruction of canon -- this movie goes so far as to nullify the original adventures of Roddenberry's Kirk and co. Understands the only way to do a space opera is with a touch of tongue-in-cheek swashbuckling and everyone in the cast is game. An admirable attempt to update a property that had become so ingrained in the popular culture that it had lost the ability to impart meaning; this Star Trek, at the very least, feels like a product of today.

Chris Pine is this generation's Mark Hamill. Cast into an iconic role as a beautiful young man only to age very poorly and look like holy hell by the time the third movie is released. There's a reason he wears a beard now. A bold prediction, but I've been right before. After Patrick Swayze died in 2009 (the year we lost Michael Jackson) my wife asked me who would be a celebrity to die that would make me shrug, and I prophetically answered Brittany Murphy. I wish that was made up. It isn't.

Sue me. I think it’s the best Star Trek movie. This whole franchise had its ups and downs, but this one kicked off my interest in the whole franchise. Abrams handled this amazingly well. It feels in line with an already established universe, but it feels so fresh and it’s extremely well paced and acted. A funny, heartfelt, visually amazing game changer. Watch it, even if you’re not a Trekkie.

a trek movie which feels more like star wars than star trek. fast paced action, unyielding tempo and some light-hearted scenes makes this the pop corn movie of the year. it's good that all the cast members got their deserved spotlights, although spock (rightfully) steals much of the show. but the bottomline is, it has nothing innovative or groundbreaking that could be expected from a franchise that pretty much owns the sci fi world.

As my first introduction (beyond the mainstream knowledge) to the Star Trek franchise.. This was largely impressive and entirely engulfing. I felt instantly at home and instantly connected to all the characters. Abrams has done some serious good here, the cast is near perfect and yes, there are flaws, but.. This is looking to be maybe even the best summer blockbuster of the year. I can't wait to see more of this and I finally feel inclined to get into the Trek-world. Thank you, Abrams, for this.

After reading multiple sources of positie reception for this unexpectedly good revival for the series, I made the decision to see it. Although it didn't fully satisfy my expectations, Star Trek is a spectacular comeback and impact on all of the Trekkies fans that gradually hyped it up. Everybody is perfect as the old USS Enterprise crew of the past, especially Spock. Sure it has a deal of inconsistencies and genuinely annoying flaws, but Abrams's vision will be remembered for quite some time.

This is not Star Trek, this is Alterna Trek. From that point of view its quite entertaining. The fun and adventure of TOS is present, with a boost of energy. Some of the characterisations are cringe inducing (Wuck you, Weckov!), including a cardboard villain, but the Kirk-Spock-McCoy triumvirate is solid with a touch of the original magic. Pegg is fun as Scottie, even with limited time. The romance: WTF?! The story could be better, hopefully the sequels are more inspired and a little deeper.

Unafraid to admit that J.J. has made me a Trekkie again. Marked out for this big time; any imperfections were glossed over at the prospect of seeing a fresh take on the material & the rejuvenation of a series which has meant a lot to television and, to a lesser extent, film. The appearance of Nimoy, while seen as some I'm sure as a cheap pop to appease hardcore Trek fans, really worked for me. The film employs a strong mix of established stars and young talent. Very complete film; Abrams' best.

This is an enjoyable and cleverly-concocted adventure, thereby forming an immediate contrast with any previous TREK incarnation that I have encountered. The casting seems right and the relations between the central characters well-handled. The overarching feeling of knowing amusement indicates this is blockbuster filmmaking at its canniest (with everything that implies, though perhaps not quite as canny as AVATAR), even if it perhaps does not quite sustain the energy until the conclusion.

Arguably the best Star Trek movie, JJ Abrams really honored the franchise with *gasp* a legit reboot (maybe the first in the history of film). The actors were from good to great in both honoring and adding to the roles that are already well established. It was nice to see special effects make the battles between ships what we only wished they could have been in the past shows/movies. After the movie ended I wanted the sequel to start up because it pumped me up so much. Exceeded my expectations.

Top badass moment? Realising that like fake news, you can have fake Star Trek too. The fake old Spock was very convincing though, I must say. Like a MTV nightmare, the lens flares, earthquake cam and runningaroundalotforthesakeofit made me pine for the good old days of Next Generation human interest stories, where nothing actually happens. This film is wrong on so many (technobabble) levels, but somehow it’s still jolly entertaining. How annoying is that? No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

I'm not sure how to score this. This is not Star Trek. This is a blockbuster action fanfic, much of which seems inspired by Star Wars. Gene Roddenberry must be turning in his grave. Nevertheless, it probably is the most widely appealing Star Trek title produced, which I suppose is worth something. It succeeded where Nemesis and Enterprise failed - rebooting the series into something that appealed to a wider audience. Also, the film seemed to shamelessly trade logic for imagery and adrenaline.

There's something quite extrodinary about this film that I can't quite put my finger on. As a Trek fan, it ticks all the boxes; cast is spot on, plot is pretty good, special effects are outstanding. Chris Pine is spot on as Kirk and oozes the sex appeal that Shatner had in the original series...hasn't been given credit for his brilliant perfoemance. I didn't expect that this film would be just brilliant. The best Trek film by far. I just loved it.

Well I'll be damned; this thing was pretty great! I can't believe it. It should be known that I have no interest in or attachment to any of the previous incarnations of this franchise, so I came in completely fresh and expecting zilch. I thought Abrams and his crew did a great job at contemporizing the characters in a way that engaged non-fans like me. The movie's pacing was surprisingly quick, but it did not sacrifice any of the character development in the process. Classic summer popcorn movie

Skeptical to the moment I walked into the theater, I was prepared for disaster. Suddenly, the film opened with some vintage Trek porn, the camera swooping gracefully around a Federation starship. J.J. Abrams does what should be done to any iconic piece of pop culture and spins it in a new direction, and I love that they explain this away with an alternate reality. It ventures into Star Wars territory at times in terms of action, but that's not necessarily bad. The cast is all-around fantastic, perfectly capturing the spirit of the old crew. It is the characters that truly make this movie. Each person shines as bright as all those lens flares.

This first film in the new rebooted Star Trek universe was an enjoyable watch that had every science cliche squashed into a single movie. Black holes, doomsday weapon, enormous enemy warship, time travel, alternate history and seeing young versions of memorable characters interact with an older version of themselves. Good cast of characters who are engaging to watch but the main villain was poor. A diversion to visit Spock for an info dump, although necessary, negatively affects the films pacing

Mediocre cinematography (see: lens flares and camera shaking), acting, and writing ought to rightfully bring this score down. However, as it stands, I found it quite enjoyable in spite of its flaws. The Star Trek universe still comes across as treacherous and claustrophobic, with nothing pleasant to offer viewers, and it's not thrilling either thanks to the weak characters. As a lifelong Star Wars hardcore I'm embarrassed at how much more muscular, witty, energetic, and fun this movie is than the whole prequel trilogy put together. You can imagine then, how annoying it is to face a constant barrage of knowing self-reference, of smarmy winks-and-nods. The visual effects are stunning (especially on IMax). JJ Abrams created a 'glossy' feel to the film that works in its favour. Special kudos goes to Karl Eomer Urban who pulls off a stunningly accurate Bones. I felt let down by Nero, the charactor played by Eric Bana. There's very good characterization, not too shabby visual effects serving a purpose and a tight directing. Only the plot can't quite carry it all on the same level.

The only soft point of Star Trek is the weak plot and the absence of a philosophical background, but thats outweighed by the pacing and action superior to any other of the Star Trek movies and the successful re-introduction of the original Enterprise crew - with the clever ploy that Star Trek is now taking place in an alternate timeline, allowing further modernisations and deviances from the original series - and a continuation of the franchise into directions where no man has gone before.

This was a good sequel to Star Trek Nemesis, but I wish that Picard had been in it more.

I am the only person alive who does not love this movie. Hollywood action flicks have grown a bit long in the tooth for me, and the usual things you expect from them like amazing special effects aren't present here (they're merely average). The set designs, however, were great, especially in the Enterprise. Go see it - you'll love it. I have no particular good reasons for not loving it; I just don't.

A fast-paced, often hilarious, but always invigorating action/sci-fi mashup film with some of the most accurate, excellent casting in a movie I've seen in years. Each actor embodies the character he or she is playing perfectly, mixing attributes of the originals with new, interesting details.

Awesome. I'm familiar with the original series but don't consider myself a "fan", so I was pretty happy to see the way this new Trek flick totally pitches the entire pre-existing Star Trek canon out the window in the opening minutes. The writing (both story and dialog) is clever and the action is fast paced and exciting. Looking forward to more adventures with this fun Enterprise crew.

Absolutely stunning! Whether you are a Trek fan or not, this is a great and exciting thrill ride for all. The effects are top notch, making you actually feel like they filmed these scenes in space, and the action is very engaging, but more importantly, the character moments give us wonderful glimpses into the people who will eventually form one of the most beloved crews of all time. Top notch performances from all and plenty of humor.

Brilliant. So brilliant. I wasn't a Trekkie before seeing this film; I knew next to nothing, and I've actually heard that's one of the best ways to go into this film. I loved every moment of this movie-- the acting was amazing, the casting was perfect, and it was surprisingly very funny. I will definitely be checking out all the series now. I'm addicted. :'D

Take some basic Star Trek elements, mix'em up together with summer blockbuster elements and you've got the new Star Trek. If I judge it on its own, it's an okay movie and a very enjoyable one too. If I judge it compared to the best of Star Trek, it's a big step backwards in quality. Sure, it's action heavy and full of eye candy, but there's also very little substance. Star Trek is (was) a lot more than Kirk, Spock a bit of McCoy and a ship called Enterprise, but Abrams seems to think otherwise.

i disliked the tv show bc i was a star wars kid growing up, and waiting for a random phaser or photon missile was simply not enough. i went into this movie not expecting much, excepting a solid bunch of reviews from people with whom i tend to agree in terms of films. the ultra-cool kirk character had me thinking i was in for the standard hollywood action film, but once kirk and spock began interacting, things took off. the interactions bw the two single-handedly carried the film.

I had never been exposed to Star Trek in any form but I truly enjoyed this film. Strong cast (Zachary Quinto & Chris Pine especially impressive), exciting action sequences and tight pacing throughout. JJ Abrams seems to rehash this time travel/alternate universe concept quite often (Fringe, Lost, Felicity) but it enables artistic liberties that ensures the franchise is fresh and relevant for a generation of new fans. Solid popcorn movie that leaves you wanting more.

I understand the very hard task of introducing this infamous franchise with all its nerd labeled baggage to the new audience without alienating the old faithful one. But this is no excuse for plot holes, scientific wtfs, unnecessary sexiness and all other crap akin to Transformers. I love Trek, I understand and appreciate the need to move on and revive the franchise, and I am ready for anything served with Trek label. But I am not blind. 15 for the effort, 50 for Nimoy and love of Trek.

As a self-proclaimed Trekkie, I was worried about watching this film with a large of all my non-Trekkie friends. While I was able to understand certain references that slipped past my normie friends, I can say with certainty that everyone in the group, including me, enjoyed this film equally. -2 points for product placement.

I actively dislike Star Trek in general (I think in all its incarnations it epitomises the failings of TV sci-fi), and I think that heightened my enjoyment of this. It's fantastically paced, exciting, tense, and confident in its own ability to tell a story. Sure the plot makes no sense, the science is complete shit (Spock's exposition dump was particularly baffling), and much of the action is contrived, but it's an action movie, and those aren't the things you judge an action movie on.

I don't know or care what happened in this movie and the soundtrack was by the numbers, but the visuals were amazing. Lens flares are given their reparations for past Hollywood oppression.

The plot is silly as shit in many ways and insanely contrived in many others, but as a sci-fi action thriller it does its job well and is supported by a good cast and likable characters. It's definitely no high quality space drama, but for what it is it's quite enjoyable so long as you don't set your expectations for it too high.

Star Trek is reborn in a lens-flared explosion of bad plots. Kurtzman and Orci continue to knock out poor scripts, but Abrams and the cast work valiantly to bring it to life. The film skips along at a fast enough pace that you will only question the plot holes after it's over and the cast all perform admirably in their roles. It's a dumbed-down action movie in Star Trek clothing with very little substance to it, but there's enough there to enjoy if you want a sci-fi adventure movie.

Very fun action movie. Forgoes interesting moral and philosophical dilemmas for more explosions. A winning choice for a film clearly trying to appeal to a much wider audience than the original Star Trek television shows.
