If Woody came out with this self indulgence after the last 20 years of output I would boo him into the ground. But 1980 and back, the creep earned it. I am the biggest hypocrite, drag me kicking and screaming into Italian surrealism artsy fart cinema, but will gladly press play on the American ripoffs because maybe Jessica Harper will show a boob.

Removing all the idiosyncratic jokes, the core appreciation I have for Woody Allen remains, and in this movie it's extremely prevailant. No doubt, non-intellectuals wont appreciate it, neither will non-movie buffs, but this is a truly amazing film. It touched my heart in the same way that the unlikely "Radio Days" did, perhaps no one else can see this genius, but this is truly a masterpiece.

It's beautifully shot, has a few very funny jokes, and the idea is interesting. But it reeks of self-indulgence, the Fellini-isms get tired after a while, and it's uncomfortably vicious towards Allen's critics and fans. The ending is an awkward and unfunny bit of business that carries the self-referential schtick one step too far. Also, Charlotte Rampling looks like she stepped straight out of Birkenau. We're supposed to find this character alluring?

Well, apparently Stardust Memories is Allen's favorite film, and one can see why. This works as an absolute tribute - something you can sense he's been longing for over the years - and then of course this is probably the best looking Woody Allen film. The cinematography is superb on every level. One thing bothers me though. If this is a tribute to 8 1/2 - made on the condition that the filmmaker had no clue what he was doing - Allen seems to be to much in control.

Woody channels Fellini and the result is "Stardust Memories", a film both funny and somber -and did I mention quite pretentious as well? But this is also one of Allen's finest works and certainly his most artistic picture, a jewel that embellishes his filmography, this long, satirical epic on despair. The cinematography is stunning and the direction masterful -I actually think this is a gigantic improvement of "8 1/2" because it may be just as self-indulgent but it's thrice more entertaining.

Woody Allen's "8 1/2" (with a little Bergman thrown in for good measure). It's not his best organized film but it may be his most honest. The black-and-white photography is absolutely gorgeous and Charlotte Rampling gives her most intense and haunting performance.

There's a certain irony (not lost on Allen, I'm sure) to such a narcissistic neurotic making such an indulgent, self-referential film. It's a fun concept, though, and makes for an entertaining film, even if it never scales to the heights of its primary inspiration, 8 1/2. Charming and funny. Gordon Willis is the man, by the way.

Allen's take on the kind of self-referential existentialism Fellini attempted with 8 1/2. It's made with less grace than that film, as it seems a little jumbled, but makes up for it with heart. Allen boasts a particularly wicked sense of humor here, with lots of wonderful little moments of surrealism. Gordon Willis' black & white photography is absolutely fantastic (even beats Manhattan).

Maybe Woody's most sincere film and in a sense it is a misunderstood masterpiece. I didn't care too much for the women in this film and kept hoping Farrow or Keaton would pop up but it still worked. The cinematography is awesome and there is some really funny classic scenes.

Woody Allen very often dances around the autobiographical, self-analytical, and existentially angsty, in a manner resembling his idols Fellini and Bergman. But Stardust Memories is perhaps the earliest example of full-on, heavy-duty self-indulgent deconstruction. At his best, he steps further away from himself than he does here, but as this masturbatory side of him goes, Stardust Memories is very good fun, and never tiring or bothersome.

I've always been extremely confused by the fact that this movie was so coldly received when it first came out. Sure, fine, it's narratively scattered and meanders a little, but it's consistently funny, thought-provoking and contains potential career-best work from Gordon Willis. Also, you get to see a dead rabbit. What did people at the time really want?

Not top-notch Woody, but pretty close. The fragmented storytelling works with the film's somewhat heightened reality, and the existential malaise is paired well with pretty strong comedy.

One of Woody's best. A phenomenal story about a filmmaker, clearly influenced by 8 1/2, but clearly from the creativity of Woody's incredible mind. It also might be his best performance, it's hilarious, it looks fantastic, etc. "Particularly the early, funny ones."

(Viewed in 2010): S.M is an entertaining film that highlights the serious limitations of Allen as a writer-director which Rosenbaum nailed in one of his only successful quasi-contrarian long form takedowns. His Fellini and Bergman worship has always been a problem, and S.D is essentially his 8 1/2 but with none of the invention of Fellini's masterpiece. It's a typically neurotic exercise in self-aggrandizement disguised as playful critique (Welles was also correct), but it has its moments.

Woody seems to want to have his cake and eat it too, by making a character that's exactly like him, all the way down to details like magic tricks, but claiming critics are insane for thinking so, in some sort of cycle of disdain. The film itself is fine, particularly the cinematography, but it's also, fittingly, like Woody: a drama that can't help peppering in little quips and a comedy that can't be satisfied with just making people laugh. Was the limo driver Woody in a fat suit?

It's very admirably done, and I'm sure it was important to Woody that he make this, but it's a bit more of a chore to sit through than most of his best films and not much more insightful or creative.

This movie is really under appreciated. One of Allen`s better films. In his second tier, I guess. I DON`T HAVE ANYTHING INTERESTING TO SAY ABOUT THIS MOVIE. I LIKE THE END, I THOUGHT IT WAS CLEVER. I usually hate the self referential bullshit, but I didn`t mind it here. I`m not sure why. Maybe because it works equally well as an autobiographical piece, or as a work of complete fiction. You can come at it from either direction.

Gordon WIllis's cinematography was amazing, the wistful fantasies that weave in and out of Sandy's world are a great homage to/parody of 8 1/2. More abstract and unconventional from typical Woody, but the nonlinear narrative and occasional bouts of fantasy provide another window to elucidate on the typical themes of faith, purpose, and love that he often tackles.

Woody shows again that he is a genius. Sure, the themes are the same as the rest of his movies. But this is probably his most surreal, and he uses elements here he doesn't normally use. Ultimately, I like him because he asks the questions we all need to ask but hate to.

Woody tries to do Fellini's 8.5. But unlike Fellini the fragmented stream-of-conscious story structure isn't Allen's forte. With such a fragmented story structure there are a few parts that work, but the majority doesn't alas. The best thing this has going for it is the beautiful cinematography.

Woody Allen has always been honest about his narcissism, but he has never expressed it with such heart and openness as he does in Stardust Memories. Each moment I began feeling I should hate him for his egotism, he charms me while baring his soul. Allen clearly has an incredible love for his influences, which he shamelessly uses as a frame work for his own films. Many laugh out loud moments, exceedingly gorgeous b&w cinematography, and a spellbinding ending.

This film voices many grievances (as do most Allen films) and only hints at some semblance of consolation. But maybe that's okay. Maybe Allen's sole intent was to vent; about his fans, about his career, about love and about the meaning of life. Whatever the point is, Allen does it with beautiful cinematography (I've never seen so many interesting faces in one film), and some very funny scenes. Self indulgent? Maybe, but I don't mind. It's no 8 1/2, but this is a very good movie.

Allen has said that it's wrong to see this film as autobiographical, and I can see what he means. People tended to read this as him saying that he didn't want to make funny films anymore, but that reading ignores the fact that this film ends up in exactly the opposite place.

Quite good Allen drama/comedy with shades of Bergman and Fellini. I enjoyed the b/w cinematography and it was delightful to see Rampling and Harper in something like this. It was a solid film but it didn't really strike me as one of Allen's very best as I had heard. Probably one to revisit later.
