A unique, intimate and honest portrayal of a girl grieving for the loss of her best friend. That just happens to take place on the day the world ends as we know it. (imdb)

Shallow, incoherent, and uninspired.

An incomprehensible, garbled mess. If A quiet place, The Congress, The Mist and Any coming of age hipster chick indie film with a pretentious soundtrack that's been released within the last 5 years had a love child, this would be it. That's great and all but this farrago of disparate parts is akin to putting chocolate, salami, tofu and Kraft singles cheese in a blender and swallowing it. Some things are better left on the cutting room floor. More of a tech demo than a film.

The awful soundtrack and the completely unnecessary animation ruined this film.

Not all of the pieces fit together well but I think there's an excitement to how unabashed it is about what it is trying to accomplish. It helps that it's shot beautiful with some great imagery, an excellent usage of its monsters (knowing that it shouldn't show them all the time). A good performance by the lead. Some of the musical choices hurt the tone, and when its more conventional aspects creep in it's less inspired. But at the very least it's pretty unique.

It's conceptually interesting, but in practice it feels like two detached story lines that never really intersect.

Visually appealing, but the several plot lines were underdeveloped and honestly incomprehensible. The sci-fi apocalypse was what a 5 year old would have written. An ironically self-centered portrayal of the guilt and grief the character feels for her selfish behavior

Starfish has strong similarities to something that Shane Carruth would make, with its difficult and magical narrative. I never could get close to the main (only) character as she is kept at arms length. The science fiction aspect works the least as it feels to be written in code to hide its simplicity. A very pretty film to look at and an interesting look at grief.
