A truly good Frances Ha -- she also ends up going to France, but with her old friend. It might be seen as a dull character study, but it works much more as a film about compassion than a simple edgy portrait exhaling indieness.

The protagonist is made out to be the most sympathetic of an aggressively unsympathetic bunch. This movie's good qualities exist chiefly in unrelated pieces: the friendship between the young and old woman, the washed-out color palate, a clinical portrayal of the modern pornography industry. There wasn't much coherency or resolution, but I don't regret watching this.

The characters needed more texture but this beautifully shot indie works thanks to the unsentimental and palpable cross-generational bond achieved by the effortless, naturalistic performances of the two actresses.

An understated, unsentimental and very realistic character study, but it's not just the ending that made me appreciate it a bit more retrospectively than I did while watching it; the cast and story weren't especially shiny in their dullness. *Preview*: #13#, exp-3*, story, reviews, R2.

The stark contrast between the two female leads who share an unlikely bond is beautifully drawn. The crazy antics of Hemingway's roommates confuses the tone, at times, but the all together the film is refreshing.

A sensitive, largely delicate portrayal of two women reaching out and/or finding support for one another. Baker fills this film with a quiet melancholy, and he allows silences and stillnesses to accumulate between the women. I felt the one hardcore scene, while generally shot out of focus, still took away from the overall impact of the film. It struck me as lacking imagination. That said, the central relationship is so well-portrayed that the film succeeds in spite of that misstep

People kept saying i had to see this after i hated Tangerine, like it was going to force me to completely re-evaluate my opinion of Baker. It didn't, but i think i have a pretty good grasp on what he's going for. That is to say, it's perfectly harmless, almost perfunctory Amer-Indie Sundance filmmaking dressed up with self-consciously rough aesthetics and "authentic" (read: working class) characters. I guess he's perfect for people who think mumblecore is too bourgeois but this is pretty basic.

Great performances by the two leads. Well-shot and well-told. Baker is a strong talent, and his commitment to telling humane, complex stories of working-class and marginalized people is truly commendable.

Not everything the two characters do feels entirely in character, but particularly Johnson delivers a great performance and the pacing and tone are great. Sean Baker excels in taking marginal characters, but rather than delivering dry social criticism making their stories exceedingly watchable.

For a film that is visually a little bland & occasionally a little slow-paced, Starlet is still rather compelling thanks to strong performances from Maeve & Hemingway. Using the porn industry as a setting, the film explores conflict, both internal & external, with characters either succumbing to or overcoming it; guilt, remorse, jealousy & the need of being looked after all playing a part. It's not ground-breaking, but it is done well enough that you root for some of the characters by the end.

More often than not films about intergenerational relationships - in particular those spanning 60+ years - rely too much on the unusual nature of such relationships such that they lack any sincerity and/or authenticity. Baker does very well to avoid this trap, which is helped by the impressive performances of Dree Hemingway (although she's no Mariel Heminghway) and Besedka Johnson in her only film role.

Agora vejo o apelo do Sean Baker, o primeiro filme que vi dele foi The Florida Project e todo aquele white trash me irritou deveras. Esse aqui é muito melhor e com grande sensibilidade ele tece grandes relações humanas, menos pela Melissa que também é white trash, hahaha Na Mubi.

Featuring great performances by the leading duo of Dree Hemingway and Besedka Johnson, the beautifully shot "Starlet" is an endearing watch. Baker and Bergoch's slice-of-life script is captivating: the characters and their arc are really well done and carry the film on their shoulders as they immerse the viewer in every little moment for the entire duration. And although familiar tropes aren't avoided, the film never becomes hackneyed, emerging instead as emotionally powerful in its restraint.
