Not as good as *Mr. Smith Goes to Washington*, perhaps, but if you liked that one (as well as other Capra films), this is worth checking out. Like *Smith* the characterization of politics still ring true. Tracy and Hepburn are as good as always (particularly Hepburn, especially from the moment she gets tipsy at the end). The comedic moments didn't work so well on me, but no other filmmaker consistently delivers American Idealism in as intense and sincere a way as Capra.

A fine cast wasted on sanctimonious piffle.

Capra sure makes you wanna yell compassionately along with the protagonist. Great political flick. Ending scene is very similar to It's a Wonderful Life.

"The shock of State of the Union, Capra's last movie in a political vein, is its technical sloppiness." - Dan Callahan

Masterful political satire, which feels as relevant and fresh as any modern take on the subject. Entire cast (especially Tracy and sexy Lansbury) fire on all cylinders, but film belongs to Hepburn, whose portrait of a wounded wife contributes some of her finest moments ever on screen. Director Capra can't help resorting to occasional speechifying, but when the speakers are this great, it's hard to complain. Love the besotted Margaret Hamilton in support!

Doesn't quite make it to Capra classic status, but still it has an interesting screenplay and many very good scenes. Angela Lansbury is very fine.

Katharine Hepburn is excellent and the political backbiting rings true to this day, but the problem is that Tracy's globalist populist ideals make you want him to stay as far away from politics as the villains.

Far cry from Capra's top of the line political corn. No wonder he didn't try this again....

It's Spencer Tracy & Katharine Hepburn doing a political satire, what's there not to love?! With excellent support from both Van Johnson & Adolphe Menjou working on the campaign, it's a snappy time. Wish they'd found more room for the stone cold Angela Lansbury character. She kinda disappears for long stretches to give room for the main couple, but whenever she shows-up, she steals the scenes for me.

RARBG.
