Dick Powell stars as Haven, a government private investigator assigned to investigate the murders of two cavalrymen. Traveling incognito, he arrives in a small frontier outpost, where saloon singer Charlie controls all illegal activities. After making short work of Charlie's burly henchman, Haven gets a job at her gambling emporium, biding his time and gathering evidence against the gorgeous crime chieftain. (imdb)

Wonderfully odd western...feels like a 40's urban detective flick, with great dialogue and a terrific cast. Includes a brief scene with Charles (Ming the Merciless) Middleton as the town sheriff, doing something remarkably intelligent under the circumstances.

If this had been directed by Jacques Tourneur, and the script had been tightened a little, it might have been a cowboy noir, but directed by Sidney Lanfield it is nothing but a dull black and white Western redeemed by the reserved presence of the lovely Jane Greer and hampered by the modern face of a miscast Dick Powell. Burl Ives, Agnes Moorehead and especially Raymond Burr give good support, but it doesn't really help.

Finally, a Western-Noir that is actually full out noir rather than a western with noir touches or themes. Powell is his usual noir self, which is pretty good though relying heavily on charisma, the supporting cast is equally strong, and the mystery is an entertaining one. I'm not sure there's anything truly special about it, but it's a fun time.

It's okay but very forgettable. I liked the premise of the undercover investigator and the western noir. Fav scene: shooting through the door.

Cool to see the noir-style dialogue transferred over to a western. Definitely made more a different kind of cowboy adventure, and with Dick Powell, wouldn't you know. Did feel the experience was a little hollow. The edge wasn't really there. But that doesn't mean I didn't appreciate what they were doing. It absolutely was enjoyable.
