Mickey Mouse prances around the boat forcing every other creature onboard to sing and dance to the tune of his power-crazed frenzy. It's all too real to laugh at now.

Creativity meets bad taste in a surprisingly unexpected place. I've seen plenty of better shorts, even from this era, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it is enjoyable and strange.

Animal abuse: fun for the whole family. Now with sound!

A classic, but beyond that it has little entertainment value. It has a plot that even by 1928 standards is surprisingly incoherent, which basically consists of Mickey gleefully engaging in some pretty serious mistreatment of every other animal on the boat for Minnie's entertainment, to the point where it becomes offensive (pig molestation the most obvious example). It's an important film, but other than that it's really not very worthwhile.. Pretty hard to rate for this reason.

Really, its not that entertaining. However, its a landmark in cinematic history, so it commands respect.

Lots of fun. My grandma was the target audience for this in 1928, and she's still alive (she's 98)!

Fuck you for hurting a cat, Mickey! Great sound and surprisingly sophisticated animation, though.

Iconic and quaint. Fav scene: birds are assholes and I'm glad Mickey knows that too.

Humorous at times. Now in the public domain as of 1/1/2024, something long overdue. Remember kids, it's okay to abuse animals as long as you make a song out of it!

Respect it! You basically don't have a choice. Like Mickey Mouse or don't, but understand what this film represents: the point at which synchronized sound became a regular part of animated films. Really good!

Is Disney's new, wholly-owned star all that different from Oswald in his debut? Not at all, really. The ears and tail are different and he has a fancier outfit to stand out a little, and his Pete is a cat instead of a bear, but that's as far as it goes. There is one real difference, though: a soundtrack. Scratchy as it may be, it's put to good use. After all those silent musical jokes of the last year or two, they were clearly happy to finally have something to set them to.

One of those awful old cartoons. Disney made the right decision when he banned tobacco and cow udders from his cartoons.

A fine example from the era in which animators were beginning to realize the extent to which their medium could transcend the possible. If you like nothing else about Steamboat Willie, you can appreciate that the sound is absolutely fantastic for its time.

While Steamboat Willie wasn't actually the first cartoon with sound, it was undeniably a pioneer project. That's especially the case when you consider just how WELL the sound and picture are synchronized.

Bullying the animals goes kinda too far, don't you think, and, luckily enough, Mickey has made some much better films later on. Though watching this with companion who appreciates things so bad that they're good, you'll surely get to laugh.

This thing is lauded as a classic...but that's because Disney tells us it is. It was NOT the first synchronized sound cartoon. Plus, you know, there's an extended bit where Mickey molests a mother pig. You think I'm kidding?

I love this short so much. Years ago, I stood in a Disneyland theatre with my brother and watched 5 different shorts play at the same time, for maybe an hour. Ecstasy would be a good word to describe it. To reach any kid across decades like that, that makes it special and enduring.
