Stefan Zweig: Farewell to Europe

Intriguing drama is a consistently offbeat and surprising mix of style and content - extended, almost suffocatingly stagy speeches are set against some stunning backdrops, especially the Brazil section - but the narrative starts to spin its wheels after a while and cannot quite find enough fire to sustain the drama. Excellent, subtle work from Hader, and Sukowa all but steals the show as Zweig's coldly resentful ex-partner.

Could have been told a bit more stringently but offers a pretty unique perspective and some absolute powerhouse performances to make up for it.

The narrative is often strange but the drama is constantly satisfying. Josef Hader is very good. Beforehand knowledge of Stefan Zweig is paramount.
