Many have pointed out the homage to Dreyer's Ordet, but this is only so in a superficial sense. Where Dreyer's film ends with the miraculous reunion of spirit and flesh on multiple levels, Silent Light's final miracle rings a bit more hollow in comparison. That said, the film has all the formal elements to "make" a masterpiece--deep treatment of its theme, beautiful and purposeful cinematography, meaningful edits, and a narrative that matters. Oh, and those shots that bookend the film? Stunning.

A slow-moving and simple narrative, set in an interesting milieu and filmed in a style that seems to owe much to Malick, Tarkovsky and Dreyer. From beginnings that seem to promise little more than arty prettiness, that is, emptiness, eventually there are some sequences that are a little more involving, but it never manages to rise to the sublime heights for which the filmmakers are so clearly striving. Some of the cinematography is indeed very nice.

I'm sure the film's detractors have valid points, and I'm far too stupid or cinema-illiterate to fully appreciate this film, really - but still I cannot bring myself to give it a lower score than this. It is simply incredibly beautiful.

Perhaps the only time an homage is better than the film it's paying it to. I'm sure not many people would share that opinion though.

Everything is internal, barely reaching the surface. Slightly off, like out of a dream, and devastatingly emotional.

Reygadas has achieved miracles with 'Silent Light'. For such an uninteresting plot, it's amazing he produced such a compelling film. The pacing, the sounds, the symbolism and, of course, the cinematography are all astonishingly good.

Silent Light's beauty lies in detachment from conscience, giving an exceptionally passive viewing experience. There is a close-up on a blade of grass, a patch of skin; textures of the world. Words are unnatural. The people are naked; sans superficial. A child glances at the camera; the fourth wall collapses under the weight of reality. There is trial and retribution. There is day to night. I like it, it's soft and cold, and warm and hard, and dappled and smooth..

Ordet is one of my Mt. Rushmore films and the ending to this film really shook me. A bit less freeform than the past few Reygadas I've seen, a more formal/serious approach to cinema here- but it is nonetheless beautiful and deeply felt.

I kind of get what it's going for, but this unfortunately bored me pretty thoroughly. I think there was definitely a good movie in here somewhere, but it felt mishandled directorially to me, and I didn't think much of the performances. Maybe it just caught me in the wrong mood--I don't know--but I found the ending dumb and what came before it dull. It receives a lot of comparisons to Ordet, but it's nowhere near as interesting as that film.

It reminds me Movies of 2 famous and important Scandinavian Directors ; Aki Kaurismäki and Roy Andersson! but in new Tone and Visual expression!! it seems Reygadas has found his Cinematic language and also has consolidated his position in AUTHOR CINEMA (cinéma d'auteur) by his third Film!!!

(Viewed in 2012):Reygadas is an incredibly overrated director who gets praised for copying the work of others. There are a few excellent shots in Silent Light, especially involving time lapse photography, but they don't really work as a whole: they are just isolated moments of greatness in a sea of banality. Reygadas tries (too hard?) but largely fails to give us a sense of the miraculous--of nature, of faith, of love--and it more frequently inspires boredom than awe or reverence.

Decent, but while some of it is aptly slow, much of it just seems like filler. A cut half the length would have sufficed.

Referring to the visuals, I was absolutely bawled over by them, even before the first shot had ended. Even in what seems like pedestrian shots there's a little something going on that makes it special. I was initially turned off by the too-simple storyline, but by the end it all came together well, leaving itself on an appropriate ambiguous note. But story definitely takes a back-seat in this film, it's filled with mood and moments that are hardly intellectually stimulating, but simply joyful.

features hot mennonite-on-mennoite action, and afterwards teases a scene where a bunch of children are being molested in a van, but really they're watching jacques brel.

I enjoyed this movie but somehow I find it hard to give it a very high score. Little things that slightly bothered me: The homages (it's not just the "twist" at the end) seemed a bit glib. The repeated technique of dwelling on scenes prior to revealing the context in which they can be understood seems ostentatious here. That said, there is still a lot of beauty in this movie, and I liked the sound a lot too.

very powerful directing with references to dreyer's ordet, looks for the roots of man domination and patriarchy in rural mexico. reminded me of the upcoming "das weisse band" in terms of "death" and "children" in agricaltural communities. a mix of realism and dreams.

We get a series of really really really long boring shots that are supposedly artful but which contribute nothing whatsoever to the story or its themes.

"Tells the impossibly muted story of a marriage coming undone because of a Mennonite man's affair with another woman, evincing none of the sexual danger and philosophical and political complexities of Japón and Battle in Heaven." - Ed Gonzalez

Stunningly beautiful film whose style makes up for the languid pacing and somewhat uninteresting characters. Enough happens that it's not too hard to stay focused, but I had trouble connecting with, or caring about, the people in the film which made the slow pacing a bit more of a challenge.

Initially watched the first half and could find nothing past its cinematography to be impressed with. A few months passed, I watch it again and love it. I just don't get myself, sometimes.

Probably the most beautiful film of the decade. Silent Light moves at a glacial pace, but in doing so allows us to ruminate on all of its gorgeous details.

Both a stunning homage to Dreyer and an inspired, beautiful tale on love, life, and human nature.
