In the bourgeois circles of Europe after the Great War, can anything save the modern man? Harry Haller, a solitary intellectual, has all his life feared his dual nature of being human and being a beast. He's decided to die on his 50th birthday, which is soon. He's rescued from his solipsism by the mysterious Hermine, who takes him dancing, introduces him to jazz and to the beautiful and whimsical Maria, and guides him into the hallucinations of the Magic Theater, which seem to take him into Hell (imdb)

This seems like a very literal word-for-word adaptation from the book. Now I didn't like the book that much to begin with, but translated to film everything is worse and what works in a book doesn't seem to work here on film. I can't really imagine what this film would be like without having read the novel. Either way, not recommended.

During one of von Sydow's personal maelstroms, right IN THE MIDDLE of what he was saying, there were these weird dissolves, creating the effect of chopping up what he was saying - very mindfucking. Wasn't sure whether to check out the novel too.

The futility of life is oh so beautiful and oh so futile. Oh Goethe speak to me and then show me some really dated visual effects!

Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse is my personal "Holy Bible", and maybe the most important book in my life. A bad try to adapt the "magic" of the novel to the screen. Read the book you won't regret it.
