Although there are some implausible contrivances (could a conservative American roughneck have an actual relationship w/ a liberal French artist - what do they talk about? Sports? Art?), this is compelling drama throughout. First of all, it's a shock to see Hollywood offering a sympathetic portrayal of the conservative types they constantly mock, but Damon & the filmmakers come up w/ a believable & flawed character who always has organic & understandable reasons for even his most extreme actions

Not unlike McCarthy's Spotlight, this is a nuts-and-bolts drama executed with surprising finesse, intelligence, and a couple idiosyncratic quirks. The film’s structure is pretty interesting, too. And formal aspects aside, I found myself really moved by Stillwater. The last third goes a little off the rails and looses the thread of what made this film compelling, but even then, I admired its gusto. Stillwater has some missteps, but I was disarmed by its generosity and engrossed by the craft.

Felt nicely “adultish” in its patient pacing and thoughtful tone, with mystery and thriller elements present but subdued in favor of more humanistic drama. Still though, it had its dull stretches and I think one viewing was enough.

Not quite focused enough for me, switches course two or three times. Generally liked Damon's performance as a man who desperately wants to help his daughter but is absolutely unable to.

Stillwater's "make believe" adaptation of the Amanda Knox story is very intriguing, and I found myself wondering how everything would come together. To my surprise, Tom McCarthy's execution here clumsily falters in a manner not seen in his film Spotlight. The characters don't develop in a satisfying way, motives are generally too opaque, and the movie ends up being a slow dirge to an unsatisfying conclusion. That being said, the fantastic acting and thrilling premise make it worth a watch.

I don't think is that Eastwoodian. More like a traveler's story -- who end up actually living an entire life in some months as he tries to help his daughter's "innocence" -- and cultural clashes he experiences than an actual Amanda Knox ripoff lol about how American have a hideous tendency of fucking things up -- specially when they leave America. Damon is immense. As a football fan, I absolutely loved everything related to OM and Marseille's sunny, chaotic vibe.

The entire story is based on a language misunderstanding. I did not like the father daughter dynamic at all. The French family was good, but ended tragically. Overall I was surprised that Matt Damon could be such a convincing Oklahoman. It's OK but nothing to get excited about.

Could shave off a little bit of this because there are parts where they are establishing relationships/characteristics that have already been established and more wasn't needed. Outside of that, liked it more than I thought because it was heartfelt and intelligent. It's smart because it was just about a real guy, a movie that embraces a Conservative character but doesn't just fall into mindless bashing.

I'm impressed by Matt Damon, who nails completely this basically pretty empty, guarded Oklahoma conservative, without resorting to stereotypical pitfalls that he might have been tempted to bring out. He is a reserved and sheltered shell of a man, and what I like is that the movie doesn't abuse this very realistic character into suddenly appearing to have a lot of depth, or, even worse, suddenly transforms into the much more embraced "liberal".

This film is a slow burn but the script is really compelling and pays off interestingly. Matt Damon is good in the lead role and the rest of the cast also do well here. Overall I would highly recommend this film.

Stillwater is very much a Matt Damon engine, as it truly lives and dies by his character. However, there is something to say about a lot of the secondary elements at play here between its cultural and political influences. McCarthy gives this whole story a lot more personality and its personal elements are slowly but surely more fleshed out with this attention of detail and pace. In some cases though, it does slow down too much and with some cliché conveniences, it falls slightly short.

Matt Damon is a great actor and he did his best to rescue this boring film. The romance pert is awful and should have been left out. This should have been a crime story only.

Amanda Knox spoiled the ending for me, but the particulars are so stupid that I ended up surprised anyway. And I really was already surprised by how involving the thrillery stuff was, till that laughable cop-out of a resolution that relieves both the characters and filmmakers of any real consideration of the preceding darkness, the "hints" left feeling especially cheap and manipulative and the final product in some strange, unsatisfying limbo of fidelity from which there is nothing to report.

Really enjoyed this one, and it was different than I thought. Emotional drama and thriller. Matt Damon delivers another excellent performance.

I thought this was quite good but also left me wanting a little more. Damon is great as is the little girl playing Maya. 7.2 rating from me. It could have been a little more engaging in spots, but I think the tone was deliberately set this way. Some will like it others will find it depressing and boring.

Extremely well observed and acted. This patient, thoughtful drama subverts expectations on many levels, as the characters push past their regrets, day after day.

I was blown away by STILLWATER, a movie I had on my backburner for far too long. I should have watched it sooner because this film was fantastic, partially inspired by the Amanda Knox story. I absolutely recommend this film to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Suç filmi. Kızını hapisten kurtarmaya çalışan babanın hikayesini izliyoruz. Marsilya sokaklarında geçen film, aşırı sağcı baba rolüyle Matt Damon çok iyi oynamış. 2 saatten fazla süresi olmasına rağmen, hızlı 1 film yapılmış. Ama pasaklı 1 film. Filmin sonunda, Stillwater. Ben senin babanım ben ne desem o olur.

I liked everything Camille Cottin brought to the film, but it goes down from there. This is the kind of movie I wish more people were trying to make--grown-up sensibility and story on a modest budget. Unfortunately, the $$ people need guys like Damon to star, even if the lead is much better suited to someone more, well, unassuming. I appreciated that the film focused on the human stories (rather than the courtroom details), but very little of emotional impact really hits the bullseye.

Really an odd experience, for 75 percent of the film, Damon has no personality and the film meanders around this lump of a man at sometimes achingly slow pacing. That being said the moments that are genuine do work very well, but the whole thing just becomes kinda silly and ultimately unrewarding. It isn't bad, but it certainly seems like it could have been more.
