Suspense/Thriller, Horror
1h 39m
Tom's a regular guy, a utilities lineman, married, with a young son, his wife is pregnant; he hangs out with long-time pals in a Chicago neighborhood. At a party, his sister-in-law hypnotizes him, and he goes into a deep trance. Before waking him, she suggests that he keep his mind open. That night he sees flashes of violence and the ghost of a young woman. His young son, too, is "a receiver," but while the boy is calm and coherent in his conversations with spirits, Tom is confused and agitated. (imdb)

Pretty effective thriller. The worst that ever happened to me while being hypnotized is involuntary quacking. That's a different movie though.

Pretty derivative (especially of The Shining, but also The Sixth Sense). The script unfortunately tends to feature a witty repartee style, which would be fine in a romantic comedy but seems out of place here. The tone is often confused and muddled too; for example, in some pretty outre situations the wife is reduced to mumbling mocking comments to herself like some college kid.

Criminally underrated take on the supernatural and the occult. Koepp's both straightforward and imaginative direction -- tooth scene, theather hypnotic journey, a lotta digging -- manages to escape twist-driven tropes in order to bring a hell of an authentic, mundane vibe to it -- suburban, gentle, cool, familiar, money-short Chicago neighborhood that hides a hideous crime with handshakes, cold beers and a warming sense of community. Peak Bacon.

Very Good. Set in a restful Brooklyn neighborhood, Kevin Bacon's excellent neurotic turn as the mild mannered family man haunted by a vengeful spirit seeking justice, breathes raw energy into the tired horror/thriller premise. With vital emphasis on character development, good chemistry between the main leads and deft direction, this turns out to be a pretty solid atmospheric supernatural thriller. And again, features one of the best performances by Kevin Bacon. Recommended.

The theme is not new, and anything vision/prescience isn't either. But this is a series of interesting takes on it, with some original twists as well. The relationship between the characters was much richer than it usually is in "horror-themed" movies. The kid reminded me of a Stephen King character, and the house was creepy in itself without being haunted... well yes haunted, but you know what I mean

Cool idea tied to a paint-by-numbers script. Characters do not think; they only react. When they react, they analyze nothing and have emotional responses that make a bigger mess. While this might give insight on how normies act, it makes for a robotic script where every character is a moron and therefore there is not much tension, only people following their character descriptions as a day job.

Initially engrossing but ultimately silly supernatural thriller requires its audience to be susceptible to its ideas about the supernatural and “buy-in” to it – if you’re not able to, the subsequent plot developments may strike you as silly rather than profound; it takes a wonderful Douglas as the instigator to ironically be the most savage balloon pricker in the cast. The climactic reveal ultimately seems to render the supernatural elements moot. Generally strong performances help somewhat.

Bacon is really good here, turning in a very controlled performance, as does Kathryn Erbe as his wife. I think the film's "twist" is very obvious and the bad guys are easily identified as soon as they appear onscreen, but is less about solving this mystery than depicting Bacon's transformation.

Stir of Echoes was a predictable movie but that doesn't mean that it wasn't entertaining. Bacon's character and his son see ghosts in their house. It happens to Bacon's character after being hypnotized but his son was born with the gift. The group of people who share the gift was the most interesting part of the movie for me. The main plot of Bacon's family trying to help solve a murder was basic. Bacon was Bacon. I'd seen Erbe act better in other films. Douglas was the standout for me.

Suffers from coming out around the same time as the sixth sense. Tends to meander a bit through the middle as Tom (Kevin Bacon) comes to terms with his newfound abilities. Has a couple of scares but is overall more of a supernatural thriller. Worth a watch especially since it's based on a Richard Matheson work.

Took a minute for me to accept that this was, in fact, quite good. Unfortunately, the movie then decided to spend its last twenty minutes trying to convince me otherwise. The "I'm supposta dig"-stuff just struck me as comical, and the movie culminating in something as local and unrelated to the entire premise and universe that had been built up was disappointing. Complaints aside, Stir of Echoes is actually creepy and suspenseful for the better part of its running time.

In a year that saw two excellent cinematic ghost stories, "The Blair Witch Project" and "The Sixth Sense", the release of "Stir of Echoes" in that early autumn could not have been more poorly timed. It's a shame, since "Stir of Echoes" is a very effective, well-crafted and well-acted movie. While most people compare this movie to "The Sixth Sense", this movie is a lot different and a lot better in most ways, the story is rather original and is nicely constructed.

I remember watching this film when I was 11 and it scared the crap out of me. Five years later, I watched it again, and it was more funny rather than scary. The ending was probably one of the worst I've ever seen. It was a supernatural thriller yet also a serial killer film? Bad mix. This film should've had more Samara, and less (actually, no) other bad guys. I rented this film along with Dark Water (original one), and that film scared me the most.

Impossible not to call this "i see dead people Part 2," even though this is a completely different angle. Kevin is entrancing, and the whole might have been as well if the movie had stayed with his awakening mind & not bothered so much with the other story which was infinitely less interesting as it went on. Instead of being so much, something quite simple would have been far more effective.

Though hindered by an unnecessarily large cast of bad actors, a genuinely creepy story and acceptable acting jobs by the main actors, the little kid included, make Stir of Echoes a solid horror flick and a refreshing change from the slasher type movies that were so popular during the late 90's.
