Very difficult to rate as a first time watcher in 2023... Brilliant dance and music performances - not just by the Nicholas Brothers - elevate an otherwise average script.

The narrative structure is clearly just a vehicle to showcase the singing and dancing, but it's adequate and has some nice bits of humour. The singing and dancing are well worth watching the film for, especially the mesmerizing finale.

As expected, the dance by the Nicholas Brothers is almost certainly the best dance number in musical history.

Worth watching for the broken down car scene and the tap duet in the finale. The plot is thin, nothing more than a vehicle for song and dance, and that's ok. Mostly an entertaining film.

A light, frankly insignificant plot whimsically connecting a series of musical numbers. But oh, what numbers they are. Each performer is clearly at the height of their talents, using this film as a celebration of their craft, time, and culture. A single tear shed by Lena Horne has perhaps little to do with the object of her onscreen affection, but seemingly everything to do with the force of the emotion on display.

The plot is pretty bad.The music and dancing range between decent to good with the highlights being Lena Horne singing Stormy Weather, Bill Robinson's dancing on the Tom-Tom's and the final scenes of the movie. It was nice to see a plethora of great African-American entertainers from this period get to show there stuff without any overt racism involved that I saw.

As a showcase for several of the most prominent black performers of the day, it boasts some wonderful numbers: Fats Waller is a hoot; Bill Robinson's drum dance is excellent; and the Nicholas Brothers sequence is simply unmissable. Lena Horne's dirgelike songs do stifle the otherwise pleasant pace, and the plot is expectedly threadbare, but neither of these factors prevent it from succeeding as an effective piece of old-fashioned entertainment.

To keep it short and simple: You're going to struggle to find more good vibes than this!
