My favorite moment of acting was that early scene of the little dog whimpering.

Lots of events off-screen that aren't explained, some are self censorship, others they assume they viewer had just lived through WWII and didn't need any explanation? Also nobody yells 'yo Joe!' before heading into battle and Cobra Commander gets barely any screen time.

Well constructed scenes bring home the hardship of war for those on the front line. The film has more mud and grime than action, but it works. Burgess Meredith was well cast as Ernie Pyle, and the actual clip at the end proves it.

An unusually sombre war time Hollywood film, with no great heroics or message. Worth a watch but at times it was a little dull

This is a lurker of a war movie. There are action scenes, but this is mainly a road trip with surprisingly little dialogue considering this is a story of a war correspondent. As long as you understand what this picture tries to to do, this film hits a nerve. Not to mention, having brilliantly constructed scenes. Burgess Meredith does a seemingly credible portrayal of Ernie Pyle, but there is no denying it's young Robert Mitchum that's the face of this journey through various war situations.
