A high concept art film that is somewhat reminiscent of 70's Herzog (e.g. Nosferatu and Heart Of Glass), Serra bends history to conform to his own bizarre premise: a fateful 'meeting' between Casanova and Count Dracula. Shot in low grade digital using natural light, there is a raw beauty to these images that at the best of times resembles the work of paintings ala Carvaggio. It is aloof and mysterious and near impossible to classify. Recommended for lovers of the truly eccentric.

Painterly exploration of the difference between the jovial seducer and the trance-inducing bloodsucker, but perhaps evidence that the filmmaker is one of those who try to make a virtue of their weakness, for instance by turning an inability to write dialogue or narrative into a style consisting in filming and filming and figuring it all out later. Seemed to this viewer to be a partially successful experiment at best, though one can never discount the possibility of hidden mysteries and suchlike.

Top tier hardcore arthouse thinkpiece that i could barely sit through because i'm probably not smart enough to get what the hell is going on and why. So if i would call this boring i might not do it justice. What i did like: how Serra paints the 18th century setting in natural light is marvelously done, very mysterious and as meticulously real as The Death of Louis XIV, as if you watch real events unfold with a telescope through a black hole. The sound helped achieve this type of film sorcery

Stylistically rich and compelling, it lacks any real depth or meaning. One can argue about the necessity of such eccentricity, but it sure does create interesting characters and a rather unique vibe overall.

Truly something else. In the first part you can watch Casanova as he eats, drinks and shits and how these things provide him his pleasures. In the larger part, set in the Carparthians, Dracula comes in and even though he is barely visible, his presence gives the whole thing an eerie feeling. I can't quite wrap my head around this mystery of a film, but I just loved the atmosphere and the acting.
