Volunteering as a "comfort woman" on the Manchurian front, where she is expected to service hundreds of soldiers, Harumi is commandeered by the brutal Lieutenant Narita but falls for the sensitive Mikami, Narita's direct subordinate.

Decent love-affair-in-the-middle-of-war movie; what makes it different is the moments of fantasy, dream-like sequences that sometimes catch you off-guard. It playfully questions the military code while generally toeing the line. My favorite camera shot was seeing the guy on one side of the dining hall with an overhead tracking shot then showing the girl on the other.

I may have appreciated this movie more if I didn't know how much of an outlier Japanese volunteers would have been among Manchurian comfort women - almost all of whom were Korean and Chinese slaves. Historically, the soldiers at the center of Tamura's novel were guilty of atrocities matched only by the Nazis, but he seems more concerned with the "tragedy" of a romantic escapade. It isn't bad for a melodrama, and beautifully shot by Suzuki, but its historical callousness makes it very off-color.

One of Suzuki's hidden gems with a story comparable to the works of Kenji Mizoguchi and all the visual flair you'd expect from Suzuki. Great movie!

Suzuki in his formative mode, you really feel like this is a director with something to say now. There are certain moments and effects achieved that I don't think will ever leave my mind.

Suzuki marries his constant attack on screen conventions with narrative outrage: from fantastical, perverse slow-motion sequences that scream conflict, to shards of film, ripping apart, destroying the Id of his characters literally on the screen itself. The tone and theme have unusual bite for Suzuki, who, through powerful existential - and caustically anti-National - subtleties, finds a few fresh arteries to sever.

Very serious for Suzuki. I wonder if it was in any way a response to Kobayshi's Human Condition trilogy, they seemed to share a lot of the same elements.
