Were the 70s the decade of visceral movies? I couldn't take my eyes off the screen most of the times, despite several moments with pointless dialogue or bad pacing or simply filler. I'm off to a 70s movies marathon now, being ignoring them too long. Also, Hoffman was such a boss it's not even fair.

Unlike The Sopranos, the unbearable rape scene actually effects the plot. I was surprised by how much of the harassment was unspoken/behind David's back, daring him to confront. The locals in Wake in Fright were much more abrasive. I was hoping David would somehow antagonize the locals to attack his house but instead he risks his life on a moral stand. I rooted against him but I guess I'm just pro-mob justice. I don't understand the criticism of Susan George. She was more than serviceable

Some close to the bone depictions of the toll barbarism and toxic masculinity takes on women, but that languorous rape scene is painful to watch and ultimately feels gratuitous. There’s some relatable fears re: sequestered communities in England, and the desperation that’s tied to not being in control of who crosses the threshold fuels the tension and gives you cause to root for someone against your better judgement. Hate Dustin Hoffman but he’s actually well cast in this.

Peckinpah builds up an unpleasant mood against the conflict, which is the centerpiece of the film. However, the film has its problems. One of the problems is the film's strong rape scene. It does nothing more than provoke and has very little to do with the main plot. Anyway, Straw Dogs is a daring and unpleasant thriller.

Can't believe I put this movie off for so long only to be so disappointed. Remains challenging from a psychological perspective, as it constantly operates in an uncomfortable gray area in which no character is entirely sympathetic or completely vilified. By the time it reaches its climax, I felt like I was stuck watching a boring football game where I didn't care which team won or lost. As long as that mantrap is put to good use.
