Street Gang: How We Got to Sesame Street

As someone who learned how to read and write from watching Sesame Street and still maintains a lengthy YouTube playlist of songs and segments from the show, I quite enjoyed this. It's an engaging telling of how the show came to be, along with some really delightful nuggets of footage I haven't seen before. It can feel a little like a visualized Wikipedia article at times, and it's generally over-scored, but it's really engaging and put a smile on my face.

When it focuses on the show's origin as a really once-in-a-lifetime collaboration between educators and TV writers, it's kind of magic. The idea of using all of television's almost perniciously attractive qualities to try and actually teach children seems so obvious that it's kind of stunning to realize that this show was probably the only time it was successfully done.
