Street Smart

In my day being street smart meant you didn't drive a Ford.

Nice concept, and I think Jerry Schatzberg could have done more with it, but David Freeman's script is naive and the casting is catastrophic. In real life, Fast Black would be an abominable scumbag and the journalist would be a hateful exploitative worm. Why cast the lovable Freeman and handsome "Superman" Reeve to play their parts? The studio may have wrecked this in an attempt to make it accessible, I don't know. If made in the 1970s it probably would have emerged a good movie.

Morgan Freeman is undoubtably fantastic and Kathy Baker definitely should have had an Oscar nomination. However, outside of these outstanding performances, the movie falls very flat, the flattest of which is definitely Christopher Reeve's lack of realistic emotion. The movie is flooded with stale direction and uneven pacing. And the conclusion and its path to it is unsatisfying and mediocre at best.

This is such a great concept wasted on Christopher Reeve, he comes across as a reporter who probably only does a guest birdwatching column. Morgan Freeman character is a fantastic character trapped within mediocrity.

It comes a bit too much like, the street version of white saviour, where the nice outsider comes into a world he doesn't understand to save the day. The interesting part of the movie is the acting I guess, Freeman's role. His outbursts are really chilling, and you have to admit the other actors were at least good during these moments when they were playing the people intimidated into silence. You could feel the tension on screen, n the unease of even the food truck guy witnessing the abuses.

The 2 leads both give good performances in this film. The supporting cast also does a good job in this movie. The majority of the script is good, there are some surprises in it. Overall I would recommend this film.

Reeve just doesn't work in a role like this. Maybe it is the Superman of it all but I couldn't get behind the idea that this guy is scummy. Freeman is great as a complicated pimp that can go from jovial to menacing in a second.
