Tough drama looks at the plight of a young L.A. prostitute, who shoots heroin to get through the day, sells sex just to survive, and eats roadkill sometimes when there isn't anything else available. Into this futile existence is thrown a psycho killer, who gets off on raping and slaughtering the girls he catches on the streets. Sy is a straight kid from Sanata Barbara, who gets drawn into this scuzzy underworld and tries to rescue the young prostitute from the killer and her existence. (imdb)

Christina Applegate at peak hotness playing a 16 year old hooker in LA on the run from a murderous cop. This was probably a shocking expose of life on the streets in 1990, but today the impact of seeing a teenage girl shooting up is dramatically weakened. All the killer cop stuff is pretty cheesy and straight out of a slasher film, the boyfriend character is a dweeb, and Applegate only gives up sideboob, but this is somehow not bad.

It's rough around the edges, but I kind of loved it. Applegate is great here, delivering a strong performance as a spunky & witty teen. Mendenhall is solid as Sy, and Ed Lottimer is effectively menacing as the psycho cop villain. The plot is fast & engaging, the chemistry between the two stars is there, their characters are believable & endearing, & the dialogue is pretty clever. The atmosphere feels authentic, & the tone is well-balanced. This is really worth a look & deserves more attention.
