After a Boston baked bomb takes Jake Gyllenhaal's sea legs, his girlfriend stays up all night to overcome both Jake's shitty attitude and Jake's shitty family to make him harder, better, faster, and/or stronger. A feel good movie that makes you feel terrible until the last 5 minutes.

David Gordon Green's signature humanist textures elevate this film from typical biopic fare. Genuinely funny and powerful, although the final ten minutes succumb to sappiness. Gyllenhaal is riveting as always, but whoa - Tatiana Maslany steals the whole movie. First time I've watched anything with her and I am head over heels. I would be very surprised if a supporting performance comes along to top this. Lots of bold choices here - best DGG film since Snow Angels.

'Stronger' is not the type of movie to blow you away with an epic storyline, or sweep you off your feet with clever twists and turns of the plot. Green makes a virtue of this, keeping a narrow focus on a flawed man subjected to great trauma. The result is an intimate story of overcoming trauma, carried confidently by Gyllenhaal and the lovely Tatiana Maslany. Fans of great acting will take delight in watching the supporting cast featuring such veterans as Miranda Richardson and Clancy Brown.

I'm not a point in life where feel-good/uplifiting movies are my thing, but I appreciate how well this one is shot. The most interesting part to me is how they disconnected us--the viewers--from all of the "Boston Strong" hype and gets us in the mindset of "why do these people think he's a hero," just like he feels.

Perhaps exploitative in parts and definitely a standard trauma drama at its core. At the same time, it's superbly acted. It's made by people who know how to create dramatic tension. It weaves in family drama naturally. This movie ends up being quite uplifting, when it could have been very cloying.

Good but not great. Well acted and avoids potential cliche pitfalls that a movie of this type is often victim to.

Really good when it's about how getting your legs blown off doesn't make you a good person...not so good when it adds "...but love does!"

Jake is good, Tatiana is good. The rest felt like a lot of background noise. It was ok.

Loved Sean Bobbitt's cinematography and his use of long lenses, which makes for an intimate, almost claustrophobic watch, as if to suggest the new confined reality Bauman's life had to adjust to. I just wish they had focused more on his rehabilitation, instead of wasting much of its time on meandering sequences that prevent the film from finding its voice. I wasn't surprised to find out this was edited by Dylan Tichenor who usually delivers some really long edits, it just didn't work here.

Jake Gullenhaal shined time after time and Miranda was good on her part. But as a movie there was too much of standing still waters.

I’m unsure if I’m willing to give DGG more credit than deserved but I didn’t hate this and actually felt like he was trying to actually convey a salient point about how we talk about tragedy and who is and isn’t actually empathetic to those who have suffered in these traumatic events. Who gets exploited etc. Still it’s Boston propaganda and I can’t stand for that. Kinda crazy that the guy who actually built the Boston bombs is a free man…….

Probably my least favorite Gyllenhaal movie :(, even though I like both main actors. First 2/3 of the movie was pretty boring, last 1/3 was just OK. O yeah, in real life the couple broke up again :P

Apart from the final 10 mins or so, this is a really well made, amazingly acted film. All the focus is on the people, from the script, to the direction, again, apart from the final 10 mins, where it goes sloppy and loses some points. Could have ended much 'Stronger'. It is very well shot and directed

Stronger takes the precedence of gritty realism over an inspirational comeback story. The viewer is left with some very realistic angst, substance abuse, white trash drama, moaning, bitching, blame-games and moping. It's not....... the recipe for a movie that will motivate progeny to overcome hardships. No matter how terrible Hollywoodification may be, at least it provides aspiration.

More interesting than expected because it examined the impact on the family of the victim,as well as the role of the media and by implication the wider public.

Very typical of its genre, but a decent tearjerker, carried by strong performances from Gyllenhaal and Maslany especially. All the baseball stuff was a little too cheesy and easy, but overall a good movie.

The drama was a little too loud. Decent performances from the two leads. It always gets me how they do the missing-leg-thing. *Recommendable
