Countdown to apocalypse. Corruption as a way the city breathes and lives all the way from gypsy gangsters to Vatican - Pope about to resign. All starts when a teenager dies after a night of drugs and sex with a politician and a prostitute. She contacts a brother of the gypsy gangster to help her get rid of the body. His family goes after a business man whose father left a huge debt. The politician gets rid of the gypsy. And then a mob war starts. Good eye for atmosphere and stylish action scenes

Stylish Italian mafia-noire which fails to cash in all the suspense that was building up. It's a nice movie with some really great acting and scenery but with actors like this, this could be a masterpiece. But it's only a good movie that feels more real than its famous counter parts. Probably wouldn't watch again, at least not in the next 10+ years.

So, yeah I was entertained. The same way I enjoy listening to Mumford & Sons or watching The Big Bang Theory. Nothing changes, nothing stays. Only because it is crafty and pretends to be deep by killing hookers and doing the old Wag-The-Dog-Veep-whatever-thing with not showing the Prime Minister. That doesn't turn this HD carnage into something interesting. So, spoiler alert: people die and Rome is filthy.

Suburra (2015) is one of the rawest mafia films to come out in 2015! Taking place in that mob infested country Italy with Stefano Sollima directing us through a filthy crime story of sex, drugs, politics, religion and crime families that comes full circle. Watch it! I'm sure lovers of gangster films will appreciate this one. All I got to say is: Welcome to Rome!

Loses points for doing the old "having sex and taking drugs with a hooker and the hooker dies" cliche

Stylish double crossing and fighting for power but ultimately just arseholes killing each other while some religious blokes worry about something seemingly unrelated. A bit like life I suppose.

Ok, you can see all the topoi of the crime/noir genre, from the hooker affair to the continuous rain that drop during the entire film. But everything is in the right place here, in a very stylish and compelling genre movie. Sollima (re)start where his father finished with the "poliziottesco" genre.

Too fancy for its own good, just like its annoying music which was starting whenever a tense moment happened only to deflate the atmosphere.

Towards the end loses a bit, I did not like the abrupt end although I was not expecting it.
