Die hard, on ice, with kids. Bruce could never have pulled this off, Van Damme most certainly cannot.

It's hard to hate any movie with Powers Boothe in it, but I have to put this one on ice.

Not AS bad as previously thought. There's a great fight in the arena's kitchen and some fun hockey cameos.

There is a scene were a person in a duck costume gets roasted alive. Needless to say, if you want to have a good time, don't take this movie too seriously. I just wish it had more martial arts action.

Darren McCord (Jean-Claude Van Damme) must rescue his little girl from terrorists who have interrupted the Stanley Cup ice hockey final. The bad guys threaten to blow everybody up unless they get a billion dollars from the treasury by the end of the game.

By no means Van Damme's worst. But still by no means a good film.

While it failed to catapult Van Damme into the stratosphere, Sudden Death is a superior action film that has aged surprisingly well. Quintano's script is generic and predictable--it's Die Hard in a hockey arena, as others have noted--but it doesn't really matter because it's Hyams show, featuring his trademark widescreen compositions and flair for intense action spectacle. Van Damme is better than usual as the heroic fireman, Boothe is a suitably menacing villain, and the finale is explosive.

Not as bad as some people make you believe, but indeed, there are some massive plotholes, tha acting is quite crappy and the last 20 minutes are just a joke.

I've seen this film before, it was called Die Hard and it was much better. Seriously, what a blatant rip-off. But the main problem is that Hyams has no clue about working with dialogue or actors. The level of quality is uniformly awful, not just the bits with Van Damme. It's a damning verdict when the bits of ice hockey action, distractions from the main plot, are the best parts of this stinker.

Aside from Powers Boothe and an implausible scene where JCVD disguises himself as a goalie to defuse a bomb, nothing worth mentioning to your buddies.

Awesome and fun action, maybe not enough karate, but the ending sequence is pretty cool.

Action and martial arts involving terrorists at a hockey game. I suppose this is Van Damme's rendition of Die Hard.

Pretty fucking lame. If you've ever seen any action film, ever, then you already know the plot to this piece of shit.

Yup, it's terrible. JCVD is usually good for some laughs, but aside from the beginning, and a couple of the fight scenes (namely the kitchen with the mascot, my god), it's pretty dull for an action flick. I don't give it a completely awful score because of the squirtgun flamethrower, JCVD: The Goalie, and Powers Booth's amazing fake mustache.

Good movie. So basically Die Hard but in the Arena instead of inside a tall building.

An unapologetic and surprisingly decent DIE HARD clone, SUDDEN DEATH is the weird result of an NHL owner wanting to get into the movie business via the underwhelming Hollywood apex of JCVD. Yet the movie stumbles into watchability thanks to its kooky setting (Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals), preening villain (a delicious Powers Boothe), and insane stunt work (fighting atop the Igloo). It may be more fascinating to read about than to watch, but it gets the job done.

I thought the ice hockey game was just a background for the action - but the sudden death extra time was ingenious.

van damme typically manages to put a couple cool scenes in every turd he's in. so beyond those, it's stupid and too long.

With just about the right proportion of explosions to dialogue, and with enough bullet blasts in the forehead to put Scorsese's whole filmography to shame, this Die Hard clone about an inexplicably French-accented Pittsburgh firefighter with an Irish name pulling skill sets out of his ass to foil an absurd hostage crisis at a hockey game combines its star and its director's united, if narrow, talents and clips along at a brisk enough pace to trump the extraordinary gapes in plot sense.

JCVD started his cocaine habit on the set of this film. I offer this sad fact up as an analogy for the film: a slide into dolorous monotony punctuated by brief, manic highs, contained within the narrative of an all-too-familiar tragedy. Sudden Death has some exciting moments replete with JCVD charm (and a performance:audience mismatch from Boothe almost on par with Tommy Lee Jones in Under Siege), but the film is ultimately the first of many new lows in JCVD's career before he cleaned up.
