From the man who would go on to produce all seven of the "Police Academy" films, in his sole directorial effort, comes this surprisingly fun 70's blaxploitation voodoo zombie horror flick. Although the movie features some blaxploitation and B-movie stalwarts, not to mention the bad Marki Bey starring as the titular Sugar Hill, Don Pedro Colley, as Baron Samedi, easily steals the show in this classic story of getting revenge and fighting off the mob with some voodoo zombie justice.

When a brother refuses to sell his club under pressure from the mob, he ends up beaten to death. His girlfriend Sugar Hill (the foxy Marki Bey) teams up with an old voodoo priestess to summon Baron Samedi, a powerful god who provides Sugar with an army of bug eyed zombies to get her revenge on the mob. Bad acting, minimal gore and no nudity, but the production values are very high, the guy who plays Baron Samedi is a scream, and the soundtrack is super funky. Sugar is real easy on the eyes, too.

Bey is charming as Sugar Hill, Colley's Baron Samedi is a riot, and the voodoo zombies are quite cool. This was rather enjoyable, overlaying a blaxploitation template with some undead shenanigans, and as a bonus seemed to have decent production values. Worth a look.

Baron Samedi is the best part of this movie. He is just so absolutely jazzed about everything. The most excitable Loa.

Great score. Lots of fun effects. Moves at a different rhythm than any other blaxploitation movie I've see.

It has several glaring flaws, but for the most part it feels pretty aware of them & is more concerned with having fun than explaining the logic behind everything. Sometimes that doesn't work, but it does here. Solid performances, particularly from the very memorable Don Pedro Colley, combined with a simple plot, fast pace, & plenty of unique kills make for a stylish, unique zombie/revenge movie. A few questions get left unanswered, but they don't spoil the good time. Check this one out.

It's the story of Pumpkinhead taking place on the set of White Zombie so I would call its horror pedigree pretty solid. Sugar does not have any buyer's remorse over her decision to seek revenge and while I would love an updated story really focusing on that, this is far more fun than Pumpkinhead could ever be because of that regret.

It checks the boxes as a b-movie, exploitation picture, and blaxploitation film. It does that via openly racist villains, sexist cat fights, and mid-70's gore. The writing has some silly dialogue and doesn't complicate the straightforward revenge plot. And the lead's clothes are given such prominence that the wardrobe provider has a special credit. Still, Markie Bey wonderfully elevates the material by becoming such a badass action hero that the ending approaches Black Dynamite levels. Cool fun.

This never got as good as its premise but it was entertaining throughout. Is it just me or do Marki Bey and Linda Carter look surprisingly alike?
