The mystery of the whole story is part of what makes Franco’s deliberately paced (yet short) film gripping, but Sundown rests on Roth’s performance, a cryptic, laid back turn in which his unstirring expression matches his untucked vacation wear.

Tim Roth plays an anti-hero who quickly waltzes way outside the viewer's expectations and leaves you working to grasp his mindset. As the plot progresses, things fall a little bit into place but never comfortably or happily. It's a beautifully paced dark drama with not a lot of closeups, opting to keep us at a distance. There is a thin air of Death in Venice all about it.

There’s something amusing in how much of a passive asshole this main character is, but it could have been played up for more depth, or at least more laughs. Instead, it just plays it out in such a serious and procedural tone, with each passive plot-point feeling more tedious than the last.

This film is rather niche, I'd say. In one way I'm left thinking it was really a bit too directionless and I feel a little cheated of my time but in another way (there is something near the very end that adds a bit of context) its surprisingly poignant. Suffice to say, this film won't be enjoyed by, or appeal to, all. The main character, played by Tim Roth, is clearly a very quiet and distant person and its hard to understand or relate to him for the most part. It's pretty unclear what's going o

It started off an a crashing, depressing bore, and went downhill, step by step, from there. Almost as bad as "Melancholia"....almost.

Surprisingly has more plot than the trailer suggested. I found it pretty interesting and mysterious. The pacing was consistent enough that it was always engaging and never dragged. It felt authentic and didn’t force dialogue, even allowing stretches where no conversations took place. Definitely not for everyone, but I thought this was a really unique watch.

Well executed sleight of hand by Michel Franco. Tim Roth is the perfect untrustworthy center of the film. An early gem of 2022.

Sundown is a drama that kept me intrigued from start to finish, especially towards the finale. Its calm, serene, mysterious and even frightening nature offers a great perspective/storytelling to a very simple script. Michel Franco's directing, Tim Roth and Charlotte Gainsbourg's performances were excellent. (04/29/2022 - Kadıköy Sineması)
