Charlie works on a farm from 4am to late at night. He loves the neighbor's daughter Edna but is disliked by her father. He rides a cow into a stream and is kicked off. Unconscious, he dreams of a nymph dance. Back in reality a city slicker is hurt in a car crash and is being cared for by Edna. When Charlie is rejected after attempting to imitate the slicker, the result is ambiguous--either tragic or a happy ending. Critics have long argued as to whether the final scene is real or a dream. Chaplin in full form - starts out heavy on the slapstick and goes straight for the heart. Lovely stuff.

Less than two years before Chaplin's first feature, the classic "The Kid", "Sunnyside", longer than most of his shorts, certainly doesn't benefit from its duration. The beginning is funny enough and there are good (and occasionally unexpected) ideas throughout, but progressively the jokes are spread further apart, while the story's romantic and dramatic aspects lack the sophistication of his later work and are therefore unable to stand on their own two feet. It's still a pleasant movie however.

The part where Charlie gets a bump on the head and has that dream about the fairies is kinda cute. Otherwise this is the usual baloney. Zzzzzzzz

A bit slight compared to Chaplin's last few, but a pleasant enough picture that passes by quickly and smoothly. The humor's more cute than funny most of the time (the breakfast scene, the electric organ and the goats, Charley's makeshift spats, etc.), though the whole bit with the bull ride and Charley frolicking with the nymphs was fun. Also, it feels heavy on underdeveloped elements: the bits about religion and nature from the beginning, the overabundance of minor characters, etc.

Solid early Chaplin, with lots of fun moments including the dancing with the fairy girls, trying to get rid of his girlfriend's brother, and the entire getting up in the morning scene. The movie does feel a bit like two different films for most of its run time, until everything begins to come together in the final ten minutes.
