Super is evil: It leads you down two very different paths at the same time. You may find yourself cheering on the protagonist as he dishes out merciless vigilante justice. Only to be disgusted or saddened seconds later when you realize the true cost of these actions. In essence, Super takes the idea of a superhero more serious than most straight superhero movies - in the guise of a comedy. A Deeper and more rewarding picture than you might expect. And quite funny...at times.

Do not be misled by the Kickass-ripoff beginning. Shit gets intense, and weird.

Strange, sad, and generally a feelbad movie.

After Defendor and Kickass last year, I wasn't to excited about this one but it is a good combination of the two... the mental illness and disturbing aspects of Defendor, with the broader comedy elements from Kickass. These three make a great trilogy.

This was portrayed by the marketing as a lighthearted, yet gritty, comedy Kick-Ass. It falls far more into the category of black comedy, if anything. Gunn gives us a down-to-earth and fairly realistic portrayal of costumed vigilantism. The story is quite simple and formulaic, but that could be symptomatic of the style it is lampooning. There are a lot of fantastical elements that jar somewhat, though. I'm usually a fan of Page, but found her performance an iota over the line of grating.

Offbeat take on the Superhero genre by James Gunn who wrote Tromeo and Juliet for Troma. Rainn Wilson and Ellen Page are great as the wannabe heroes of the tale. Great support from Kevin Bacon, Michael Rooker and Gregg Henry. Recommended for those who like the discover films away from the mainstream.
