Oh, Peter O'Toole, what happened? You didn't need the money that bad... did you?

Slater cuts a sweetly earnest figure even when she's not sailing through beautiful flying sequences, but not even Chris Reeve could have helped lift a script this bad. Plenty of plotholes w/ characters understanding things they couldn't possibly know as the filmmakers make the all 2 common mistake of thinking a superhero movie needn't even follow its own inner logic & the less common 1 of diminishing ur girlpower hero & villain by having them spend 1/2 the film entangled over a studly gardener.

The actors do what they can with the material, but it's just so boring and run-of-the-mill.

This was so bad yet I want to rewatch it, so I guess I liked it. Plot holes (why does she need a secret ID?), dumb decisions (FLY over the lava floor!), dependence on men, etc. make this fun to mock as I'm watching. Poor Helen Slater only got paid $75k as an unknown (Reeve got $250k) but she really is earnest. Dunaway was great when she tried. Fav scenes: I love ripping on the gardener for hitting on a teenager in her HS uniform but once the spell broke he stopped; monster. BTW everyone's white.

Hilariously awful from pretentious, Peter O'Toole dildo-waving beginning to fly-off-back-into-a-lake-like-nothing-happened end. Takes what should be a strong female lead character and reduces her to a simpering retard who at one point forgets she can fly and either can't or won't do anything productive until a man tells her she can. Best served drunk.

This movie was so bad that I'll write something else to get my mind off of how bad this movie was. Thirty years ago, a top secret agency emerged to help the underrepresented in the world. The agency became known as "The Top Secret Agency To Help The Underrepresented." Right now they're funding the overthrow of a dictator on some small island in the south pacific.

A much maligned film whose obvious flaws have overwhelmed its cinematic virtues. Szwarc struggled to find a consistent tone, mixing poetic fantasy with rather mundane 'realism', but there are some very impressive set pieces, especially the monster storm and The Phantom Zone, that hint at what could have been and showcase neat practical effects and a darkly bombastic sense of spectacle. Slater is stunning as Supergirl, and her sincerity and grace compensate for her slightly wonky performance.

Started off promising, but it ends up being way, way too long. And bad. Unfortunately. Really liked the flying/musicy bits.

As a fan of the so-bad-it-becomes-good school of filmgoing (I have Logans Run on Blu-Ray for chrissake), this is an unforgivable, unredeeming pile of 80s camp that somehow makes me nostalgic for a classic like Sheena.

Supergirl is not a good movie. It has competing factors for tone, meaning it can never decide whether it wants to be serious or silly. It has special effects that are sometimes good, sometimes not, and a lead actress who is either strong in a bad movie or out of place in a silly one. Either way, she stands out, but I can't decide if that's a good thing. It's still not a good movie, and if you have seen the first two Superman films, there's very little reason to watch this one.

An odd effort to try and parlay the dwindling impact of the Reeve films into a "sister" franchise - cut rate set design and an awkward back-story for Supes herself are chief problems, but strange campy humour, and a lack of a truly human grounding, sink this pretty quickly. Slater is good and would have been perfect in a better focused film; Dunaway is at least trying for a Hackman-like approach to her villain, but forgets Hackman played it essentially straight against his cartoonish side kicks.

This addition to the big-screen Superman world gets largely overlooked. The story is not as gripping as it wants to be, but there are moments that work well.

A must see for comic books fans? I'm not sure. It's like a side point to a real comic book movie, but I think everyone should have to live through it once, just for the experience. Crap!

So shitty. Superman IV might be better. Seriously look at the talent on the film. Dunaway, Farrow, O'Toole, and this is what they got out of it?

Helen Slater was a really good choice to portray Supergirl and her adaptation to Earth was quite charming. On the other hand, the film was very prone to bad pacing, sometimes going too slow and sometimes going too fast without even bothering to justify the inexplicable dark spots of its meagre plot. The witchcraft element felt a little out of place, although it would have helped if the action scenes were more consistently compelling at least. Still, this '80s b-movie isn't without its charms.

This isn't even vaguely movie-shaped. The plot just kind of leaves a sticky residue on your fingers as it dribbles away. That said, it *is* amazingly fun, with the highlight being Faye Dunaway, Peter Cook, and Brenda Vaccaro bitching and bantering, often giving the same riffs we were giving the movie a few seconds later. There isn't a whole lot of superhero action - a lot of it is completely unnecessary secret identity shenanigans - and what there is is baffling. But it's never boring, for sure.

This has been a guilty pleasure of mine since a time long before I knew what a "guilty pleasure" actually was; it pains me to have to give it such a low score. Alas, poor Supergirl, I knew thee well.

They paid $35 million to make this movie. They got Peter O'Toole, Faye Dunaway, Mia Farrow, expensive effects and a Jerry Goldsmith score. The Superman movie craze was still in its heyday and kids the world over went to see this. Even to its enthusiastic target audience it was disappointing.

Helen Slater is the only redeeming thing about this production. It's a shame Peter Cook and Peter O'Toole are so under used as this could have genuinely been as good as the first two Superman films. As it stands it is only just watchable with a few sparse good moments.
