This movie has exactly one decent action scene. One. In a 2 1/2-hour movie. So if you ever wonder why Man of Steel had such constant, over-the-top mayhem and destruction... here's your answer.

Some things were right, but too much went wrong. I felt like nothing happened over 150 minutes. And this movie proves the long-asked observational dilemma with Superman movies: He's just not that interesting of a character. He was extremely dull for this one, and there wasn't enough action, and way too much cheesy love garbage.

Routh is more than adequate as Superman, but his infatuation for Lois seems quite inexplicable here. There are a number of odd and implausible moments (even within the comic book world), as well. Overall entertaining and very polished, but I wish Singer had rescued X3 from Ratner and Kinberg rather than spend his efforts on this project.

Director Bryan Singer brilliantly mixes the new and the old with Superman Returns. It's true to the originals, but it has dropped the camp and gone for more depth. Real and surreal are blended together and aided by a superbly chosen cast, to make a Superman that, even with his awesome power and alien origin, is very human. Its only problem is that it may not be as memorable as the first Superman, but either way, Returns is definitely a fantastic new beginning for the Man of Steel. Awesome!

Not really a Superman movie. Fact. There's no punching or superfights at all. Just some dude in a cape that lifts things and gets shot in the eye in slow motion. He's a little creepy too, watching children and women from outside of windows. The Lex Luthor is a property shark who wants land. The soundtrack is the best part, because it makes you THINK you're watching Superman, but in the end you're watching Days of Our Kryptonian Lives.

It's a little one-dimensional and it lacks the color of the Reeve movies, but it's still tremendous fun. The movie doesn't drag at all (it is over 2 hours) except for the final 15-20 minutes. If you ever plan on seeing this, you MUST see it in theaters.

It would have been nice if Kevin Spacey had tried to act in this film. Overall, it wasn't bad, but I had forgotten 60% of the lethargic plot 10 minutes after seeing it.

Tries so hard to be like the '78 version, but fails to recapture the charm or fun. The cast, shackled by emulation though it was, performed solidly. Routh had enough presence to pull off some hero poses, but his bumbling Clark Kent needs some work. Overall though, repetitive nick of time action scenes don't generate enough excitement to make up for too many stilted conversations full of repressed emotions.

Given that Superman's basic invincibility and ability to do everything ever makes him the worst superhero ever, this film actually does reasonably with him. Spacey plays a reasonable Luther. Sadly, the relationship between Superman and Lois doesn't feel realistic thanks to a lack of chemistry and the thing with Lois' child... well, enough said.

A man learns to accept the doubtful paternity of his (adoptive) child while the apparent biological father escapes the burdens of parenthood and flies off on loftier pursuits. Though the filmmakers took the Donner/Lester version as their template, they have upped the scale (via so-so CGI) and the drama but lost the tongue-in-cheek liveliness of the earlier films. The main effect is to generate nostalgia for Kidder, Hackman and Reeve. There's really nothing interesting about the idea of Superman.

Bored me out of my skull. The storyline was directly from 50s' notorious SF flicks. It is neither dark, neither light enough at places. Other than that, it is a somewhat decent cinema experience with good visuals. But that's all. I was expecting much more from Bryan Singer.

There's not much new here (in fact, the film seems to pride itself on mimicking the Reeve movies) but it's pretty entertaining, especially considering the length. The tension and relief is there, the special effects are superb, and there are occasional good jokes. The biggest mistakes are in casting. Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth are both bland. Lois Lane needs to be a character, needs some personality. I never got the feeling from Bosworth that she was anything more than Superman's bitch.

A solid addition to the first two Superman films (part III & IV don't exist in my reality). Casting was well handled, and at times I thought Brandon Routh was channelling just a little bit of Reeve. Nope. I can't do it. I can't see Routh as the Big Blue Boy Scout. And Singer's version of the mythology, while faithful to I and II, deviates far too much with Lois's child and Superman as primarily a Christ-like figure. Furthermore, not one US flag in the whole movie. The movie is acceptable, mostly due to Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor (best version EVER).

Despite being beautifully shot from one end to another, a lot of dubious casting choices (especially Kate Bosworth's utterly banal Lois Lane), a lack of action, a lukewarm story, and the fact that Superman is inherently less interesting than Batman or Spider-Man sink it.

While it wants to be in-line with the new Batman, Singer's pseudo-sequel to Superman 2/reinvention never fully finds consistency, or a whole lot to be enraptured by in the Superman universe. I admired Brandon Routh's performance, Spacey as Lex Luthor, but the plot sort of dances around good ideas and moves uphill (especially with the Luthor plot) rather than finding that balance "Batman Begins" did so well. It's still a visual spectacle with interest, but the film could've been much more.

I enjoyed this film for the action and drama and romance--and, well, it's SUPERMAN my all-time favorite superhero. Should be called Superman Catches Stuff, as he doesn't throw a punch in the whole movie. The story takes a few questionable turns, but I do think Singer does a slightly better job than Ang Lee in trying to make real human drama out of the superhero mythos. The movie's flaws are inherent in the title character -- he's just bland, and come on, how does no one recognize him as Clark?!? The hospital scenes nearly ruin the movie but it's decent fun. The retro title sequence made my inner dork gush.

The quality of a superhero movie can often (meaning: should) be measured by the quality of its super villain. This is even more evident with a boring superhero as Superman. And Spacey's pale, bitter and insignificant Lex Luthor is far from Hackman's flamboyant, cheeky genius-trickster. Apart from that, Singer brought nothing new to Donner's take on the Superman universe.

I'll admit that I have a grudge against this movie for being the reason Singer didn't direct X-Men 3. But I think it's a bad movie in its own right. Everything is slightly off and doesn't work. It is as though the makers of Scary Movie & Airplane decided to make a Superman movie--only not be funny. Look, Singer obviously loves Donner's 1970's approach to a Superman film. But here he goes down that path without any understanding of the context and approach. As such, it plays like a bad Youtube fan trailer made by mashing up old movie clips. If I had a time machine I'd go back to warn people in 2005 about the future horrors of Kevin Spacey, Bryan Singer, and this film.

I appreciate that continuity and tone was maintained, but sometimes the movie starts taking itself way too seriously. There are moments of vintage Superman, like our hero basking in the sun amongst the clouds; that's some lovely iconic stuff. And then other times it feels dead, not aided by the fact that Bosworth isn't that good an actress, and Routh does the Kal-El okay but whiffs the Clark Kent. Still, it's nice to see a recent superhero movie that wasn't exceedingly cynical or dark.

While the film was beautifully directed and Kevin Spacey is an amazing Lex Luthor, I couldn't help while watching the film but think that its entire modus operandi, rather than simply just establishing a return to the franchise, was to apologize for the third and fourth Superman films. Big old mess of a film. Why? A) Superman doesn't need a kid. Physics of Supersex aside, the presence of a kid dramatically limits the story arc, and can only introduce more stupid angst. B) Speaking of angst, Superman comes off as a creep. Flies off after knocking up Lois, then returns and just hates the wholly decent guy who's been raising the boy all this time. C) Superman is an inherently boring character. Everyone bad's always going to have to stab him in the face with kryptonite.

A dopey re-hash of the first blockbuster Superman film, this feels more like a shambled remake rather than a fresh take on the franchise. While a few action setpieces stand out, the acting is for the most part stiff, with Brandon Routh barely doing a Christopher Reeves impersonation, rather than giving his own take on the character. Even the great Kevin Spacey is wasted in a film that tries to be different from its predecessors, but instead just feels strange.
