On the one hand, you could praise Klick's Supermarkt for being gritty, grimy, and uncompromising in its depiction of street life and an "angry young man" bouncing from stranger to stranger in his bleak, prospectless life. On the other hand, there is so little character development - or even establishment - that the lead and his story are difficult to appreciate. He was an introvert, and sorely needed a personality of some kind. His experiences as thief, sex worker etc sort of merged into one.

Even though Supermarkt doesn't paint a detailed psychological profile of its protagonist, his actions are frighteningly comprehensible. He grows up as a determined loser and tries to show the world something. Unfortunately this something is his downfall. Great camerawork, gritty atmosphere, raw performances. I liked it very much.

Interesting as a window into German society of the 70s (although it is difficult to judge how much of this is exaggerated), but not always compelling as a character study or a crime thriller.
